I wandered out last night and ended up shooting a couple of mates cars... All night. It was pretty good, especially as I've not taken shots of cars before!
I should say at this point that cars don't interest me.. In the slightest. As such, my mates chaved up motors are no more appealing to me than a clapped out old banger. And again in turn, I don't really know what I'm doing
I found lighting conditions in most places we visited to be somewhat awkward.. So most of the shots are HDR, which in turn means no EXIF. All shots were taken with a D70 and (all bar one or two) with a Sigma 15-30mm lens.

The weather was a bit dodgy, too - lots of the shots have bizzare light splodges // smudges from rain droplets. There's a fair bit of flare, too - although for the best part I don't mind it..

Here's a few shots :

The whole gallery can be found here. There are about 25 pics.
I know that there are people here who do lots of motor shooting and whatnot... So and comments, critique & tips are much appreciated :>

Not a fan of the cars :p but great pictures, I think the oversaturated vibrant colours really suit the HDR processing

I don't like them, either (the cars) O__O

The very heavy saturation was entirely intentional.

There ya go Fstop11 ;)

Really impressive! Again, the cars don't do much for me, but some of the pics look like they're off the cover of a Need For Speed game. I particularly like the first picture of the Civic, it looks mean! I think this is an instance where HDR has worked very well indeed.

OT.... You have a D70? How do you find it for noise levels at higher ISO, and have you compared it to a Canon 350D or similar. It's just that I'm swaying in the direction of the D70, and although it offers at least a lower res, the rest of the cameras spec more than makes up for it, at least compared to the 350.

If you get in a tiz about noise then don't touch a D70 - the 350D ****** all over it as far as noise levels go.
personally if a situation merits a high ISO, or even ISO 1600 and forced underexposure (to be brought back up in RAW processing, making a rough equiv. to ISO 3200 // ISO 6400) then I will use it, and am usually happy with the results. In short - I don't find noise to be an issue, but it is there, and if you hate noise, stay away from a D70. Or anything Nikon at the moment, really.

Take a close look at those shots, quite a few are pretty damn noisy in places!

I did try working without HDR, but just wasn't getting anything I was even vaguely happy with, I'm not good enough to work with the light!

The cars really are 'orrible, aren't they! :o

Hmmmmmmmmmm. Its a bit much. I wonder what MrSix will think of these ;) I like the concepts but it feels like too much.

Hmmmm...

I don't know, perhaps back to the drawing board it is. I need to get a better idea of the potential noise problem of going Nikon. Maybe, just maybe if I can scrape together another 200 odd quid, I can find a 20D or perhaps a 30D. I'm looking to buy in about 10 months time. I've started doing my homework already, but by the time I come to buy a D-SLR, there'll be loads of new models out!

/edit

The other thing I'm not so keen on with the 350D is the smaller body. I have pretty large dimensions, and I fear a 350D could be a little too small...

what feels like too much sir? The lurid colours and heavy contrast?
I can certainly understand how many don't like this. For these shots, that's how I like it... But tbh, I don't like any of these photos - I look at them and think, "woo, a car".. Which makes it difficult to try and judge how others who are into their motors would prefer shots.

So aye, any elaboration on that would be much appreciated :D

danza ~ Really, if you hate noise, stay away from Nikons - you'll only end up being half happy with your shots.. Unless you shoot eclusively at ISO 200.

Tis', I suppose, also worth noting that the D70 produces almost totally luma noise and very little colour noise (looks more like film grain than "digital" noise) - it can be used to effect. But of course you can do that in PP anyway..

HDR is definetly something that can be easily overused from what I've seen. I prefer to use it subtley rather to its extremes. I feel that the high saturation and extreme HDR effect don't really work for me.

You can hardly talk! you started everyone off! :P

Haha well true. But not to this extreme :) Plus i've spent the past few weeks hdrifying everything and I can definetly see where things go wrong.

Yes I agree. I was on your webpage a few days ago and I saw one of an urban location in HDR. It was quite a nice piece. I was supprised not to see it posted.

Edit : / HDR / Beetham Tower Liverpool

Yer I've got a few more I have to upload first. HDR is such a new toy that it is going to take time for everything to settle but I can definetly see it sticking around.

"4 copy" is nearly a fantastic shot, just a shame about the alignment of the strip light. Other than that, I love it.

*EDIT*
Just caught CyKeys post, and you probably know what I think of the majority of the shots :p however I figure if you can't say nothing nice, don't say nothing at all on this board. Which explains my above post :)

It just reminds me of the liquidise filter in PS with +50 Saturation.

I asked my mate to park up there, cos' from an angle the lights looked straight.. Like **** were they!

/goes off to try the liquidise filter

Great shots. I'm a bit meh about car shots normally but I love what you've done here. You've produced some very artistic images with your own unqiue style about them. Top marks again :)
