VTS, filter or worth going induction kit

I've had a Saxo VTS for a short while now & am thinking about some performance mods.

Its still got the stock air-intake system (everything is stock) & recon the filter may be dirty or something as its not as fast I thought it would be (it really is a VTS).

I looked around my local Hal. store & can get a cone shaped filter for £38 or Induction kit for £91. Is it worth going the extra hog & getting an induction kit? & how much will it cost to fit/can you do it yourself?

thanks

The standard breathing on the saxo is pretty restrictive. Don't just get a cone filter with no induction kit, you will be breathing hot air, which isn't the best thing to do.

Either go the whole hog, with CAI kit, or as westy said, get a replacement panel.

Is a drop in filter just a new filter that goes inside the standard air-filter box?
Is a CAI kit an induction kit?
Is a replacement panel just a filter?

sorry for the questions, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to performance parts..

If you get a nice big cone you should be able to use the current cold feed and put some heat shield around the cone to protect it from the engine and you should notice a bit of difference, am sure Paul will be along soon to let you know the best option.

The standard VTS unit is actually very good. Drop a panel filter in it and remove the piping at the front of it and replace with flexible hose.

I have a spare K+N panel filter to drop in it if interested. I only went for a Cold Air Induction kit for the burble noise with the cams.

On a day to day car I would much rather keep the std airbox with panel filter as with a CAI you lose the density of air at idle which hurts low speed efficiency and thus mpg.

Dropping in a panel filter looks like the easiest/cheapest option for the moment, err where do you route the flexible hose too? I presume the grill somewhere.
'burble noise' ...that sounds interesting, is that the hiss sound when changing gears?
Its used for a short trip to work daily so hmm maybe a cool running induction kit may not be so hot (pardon pun lol)..

The bit on the slam panel behind the grill stays where it is and then you pull out the plastic maze of pipes that link that to the airbox.

No the burble noise sounds a bit like toned down individual throttle bodies, do a search on youtube.

edit: http://youtube.com/watch?v=mvtxVZWwafA is my car at full chat

That burble noise sounds good, like some old American v8.
I'll start with a new panel filter, which is I presume the verticle box in the pic.
thx

I can get my hands on a cheap s/h induction kit for £40, dunno if its for a vts, the lad I'm getting it from has a 1.1 which it wont fit, guess I'll have tell insurers if it fits mine tho its only 200 anyway

No it doesnt, throttle body is a different diameter.

Just have my panel filter you plum :p

Well you were right about being a different diameter, about 15mm wider than the intake so I bodge-jobed it, for £40 a panel would have cost the same anyway
Plus I noticed straight away that its faster/quicker to respond and makes a nice noise now.
It runs sweet: idle at hight temp is fine.

from what I know it just is a lot better to have cold air I could be wrong but I think you will get better performance from a cold air feed rather than hot air next to the engine, (I am sure I will be soon corrected :D ) theres no need to move it further away just jury rig a piece of metal (i used an old computer case side to reflect the heat from the engine and slot it in between the filter and the engine could be a bit difficult with you having so little space there though.

Ahh
I'm a bit of a pc overclocker & directing airflow/relecting heat is 2nd nature to me.
I'll certainly give it a go sometime.
Hope this thing dont affect the MOT which is due soon.
