Hi Guys,

I need to replace my Pug 106 1.5D :o

I've got a £2000 budget and I'm use to driving a 05 Passat TDI as a company car so looking for something similar. Sadly diesels are out of my price range. I've seen a Xreg Bora 2.0 Sport for £2200 but i'm sure I can get it for sub £2000, thing is its done 100,000 miles. What are VW Petrol engines like do they run forever like the diesels? or would you not waste your money and get something else? If so what?

Cheers for any input
Zaf,

Don't do it.

This particular engine is a dog, low power output and crap MPG.

Bora is not a bad idea as they are good value but avoid the 2.0 petrol. Get the 100hp 1.6 16v engine or a TDI (inevitable price premium).

I looked into a 2.0 Golf (same engine) and everything I came up with echoed flat-6's comments. High oil usage was another characteristic of this lump.

There's nothing sporty about it. it should be called the Bora 2.0 Gash.

But Bora's on a whole are good, just not with that engine :)

the 2.0 engine produces a hilariously low 115bhp and is not economical. Avoid.

If you like the bora, maybe consider the seat toledo, generally higher specced and available with the 125bhp 1.8 or the 150/170bhp 2.3 V5 or the 110/130 1.9TDI

My dad owned a Bora 1.9TDI on a 52 plate and it was a lovely motor.
I only drove it a couple of times but it really was nice.

My old man certainly piled the miles on but never seemed to have any problems with it.

The 2.0 engine is indeed absolutely crap but guys come on, £2k for an X reg Bora? That sounds like a bargain irrespective of the engine.

Thank you for all your input, i've seen some TDIs for around 2.5K but they have around 120,000miles on them. I'm only wanting the car for 2 or 3 years do you thik they can handle another 30,000 miles?

Cheers

Zaf,

Cars don't explode at 150k.

It'll do twice that with ease if you look after it.

I have a mate with a V reg Bora tdi, its on about 180k miles and its a superb driver.

He has got it into his head that he now wants to replace it with an S320 CDi Merc thats done a mere 230k miles!

He's a Nutter! :p:D

Zaf,

I'd Bloody well hope it would mate! - I bought my old e36 318i (Petrol) @ 125k miles & sold it on @ 175k miles, its still going strong today @ well over 200k.

If a measly 1.8 petrol engine can achieve that, then I see no reason at all why a Diesel engined car from another German manufacturer would not do likewise & then some.

Don't feel silly - it's a valid question. However, be advised that certain longer lasting components may start to go. Modern engines are generally built to last but components such as turbo's, bearings, bushes, clutches etc. tend to have shorter (but still relatively long) lifespans and several of these going at one time could be expensive. You could argue that every component has a different lifespan and this could happen at any mileage, but i'd bear it in mind nonetheless.

FSH is a must and keep the oil changed regularly to keep the engine in top nick.
