VW Engine Help

Hi,

I have the serial number of a VW Engine but i am unsure as to what engine it is, age etc. Does anyone know where i can try and find this information out using the serial number?

Serial number: 311.119.225 D

VW themselves? Well they told me when my engine was made when I asked them a couple of years ago.

Ah thanks for your help people. I did think about giving VW a call but i thought that was a bit too obvious lol. I think the engine is around 30 years old as its in a 1971 beach buggy, but i'm not sure if its the original engine.
