Went to look a a golf today, got there, looked very clean, no noticible dents, scratches or marks, inside was very clean and well looked after.

Car has service history, still yet to confirm weather or not it is VW service history...Its an ex company car which has done 105k m'way miles, new tyres, boot has a 6 cd-changer. I need to ask the question about the cambelt tomorrow. Does this seem over priced in anyway? Im going to be putting about 36k on the clock over 3 years.

Managed to get him down to £4500 over the £5200 which it was advertised in the garage and the £4999 on auto trader.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...del=GOLF&min_pr=3000&max_pr=5000&max_mileage=

Im not in a situation where i can afford a 130/150 as im 23, 6 points on licence (due to expire this year) plus a claim which is the reason im buying this car. Plus the more economical the better. Im not looking for top rated performance.

Im going back to the dealers tomorow with the following questions:

1) Has the cambelt been changed?
2) When was it last serviced?

is there anything else i should be looking for?

Of course you are in a position, they are diesel Golfs not Porsche 911 Turbo's. I had no issues insuring my 530i Sport @ 23 with 0 NCB, 3 points and a fault claim.

They are when you are on a strict budget as i am :( if i could afford to insure a GT TDi 130/150 i would probably have enough money to buy one with a few less miles on the ticker aswel

Turbo. You will see people saying theirs goes to 200k miles, others 40k miles, etc but the truth is it can and will fail.

You can find if it is ok by seeing if it loses power and excessive smoke from the exhausts.

Is this the entire turbo unit or just the seals? as i heard the seals can go?

i also heard someone mention you can usually pick one up for around £60-70, cant remember if he was on about the seals or the turbo

It's bigger by 20mm. And the Golf isn't exactly an Aston Martin in the looks department is it? It's some hatchback. The R32 looks nice but a boggo diesel isn't going to snap knicker elastic at 20 paces. You dont buy it for its dashing good looks.

Then it must be down to personal preference :)

Problem with the Focus is that the interior feels cheap compared to a Golf.

Yep, only reason im not going for a focus, I cant afford the new shape, so it would have to be the old shape, and the interior just reminds me of the old style that ford used to employ years ago....Very outdated, old, cheap and looks gastly

Has full VW history, cam belt changed at 80k, it is spotless inside and out. new tyres.

6 months warrenty with £1000 per claim (no excess) for everything apart from servicing.

It's being serviced before i have it tomorrow

sounds a good un then :)

although you could have got a nice A4 for the same money :) on similar mileage and plate :)

I know but the A4's are group 12 insurance, not good for someone my age with 6 points and a claim ;)

My mate phoned me up as soon as i told him and asked him if im going to get it re-mapped, but i dont think i will. Would be no need to. Plenty enough for me :)

Arghgh why do people continue to perpetuate these myths? Spend a few hours ringing insurers! Group 12 is not a high group, there is no reason why someone who is older than me cannot insure one. I insure a Group 17 car with 3 points, no NCB and a claim. You just need to spend a few hours ringing round.

Trust me mate iv spent plenty of time ringing round insurers, iv been looking at getting a new car for the last year, the only reason i have one is because i wrote my one off last week.

Like i said earlier on in the thread, im on a very tight budget. I cant afford an A4.

You cant be on that tight a budget as you've just spent £4.5k on a car!

£4.5k was my budget, and i wouldnt have been able to afford to insure an A4. If i had the money I would love to, plus i dont want a bigger car like an A4 at the moment. If i was going to go for an audi at this precise moment it would have been an A3 but there are bugger all decent ones around at my budget.

Anyway, i havnt got £4.5k to spend, you guessed it, it came from a loan which i really didnt want to take out as it now takes my debt upto £10k.

Thanks Mea :)

Your all forgetting the fact that i wrote off my car, its not asif i had a choice, i was going to spend £4k on a car anyway so im not getting in debt "For a golf", the choice of a golf is because iv always wanted one, its a german car which we all known are reliable, its economical and its my choice. :)

At the end of the day if you are happy I guess thats all that matters but if you are as hard up as you tell us you are plus you are already in debt I honestly cant see why you thought a £4.5k car was something you really ought to buy. A 1-2k car would do the same job - ok, it wont say 'Golf' on it but less debt is good, right?

Argghhh, why does this happen every time i post a thread in this forum?????

try and find a good, reliable, nice looking (interior & exterior) diesel engined car for £1k and ill agree, but you will find there wont be.

As for getting a petrol? i dont want to, simple fact, reduce costs.
