VW Golf GT TDi 110 (whats this find like?)

You know what I meant. Golfs depreciate a lot slower than the vast majority of cars and even when they've got 140k on the clock it doesn't seem to matter, they still command a premium price.

Thing is though, the extra money you get for it is kinda offset by the bigger price to buy it, especially if you need to get yourself into more debt to buy it.

Thanks Mea :)

Your all forgetting the fact that i wrote off my car, its not asif i had a choice, i was going to spend £4k on a car anyway so im not getting in debt "For a golf", the choice of a golf is because iv always wanted one, its a german car which we all known are reliable, its economical and its my choice. :)

At the end of the day if you are happy I guess thats all that matters but if you are as hard up as you tell us you are plus you are already in debt I honestly cant see why you thought a £4.5k car was something you really ought to buy. A 1-2k car would do the same job - ok, it wont say 'Golf' on it but less debt is good, right?

Argghhh, why does this happen every time i post a thread in this forum?????

try and find a good, reliable, nice looking (interior & exterior) diesel engined car for £1k and ill agree, but you will find there wont be.

As for getting a petrol? i dont want to, simple fact, reduce costs.

There are plenty of good, reliable cars for £1k and many have diesel engines. Good looking, thats subjective but to be honest if times are hard perhaps you can't have a drop dead gorgeous car. Up the budget to £2k and there are even Mk4 Golf based VAG products to chose from so you keep the quality levels you want.

As for 'reducing costs' it makes no sense to spend an extra £2-3.5k to 'save money by using diesel'. £3.5k buys a LOT of petrol. A LOT of petrol. It's absolute false economy. Even a 2k car that did 20mpg would be cheaper overall than a £4.5k Golf!

There are very few 'simple facts' when buying used cars and most people who come on here and ask for 'advice' when actually they've already made up their mind (As if anything we said would have made any difference to your purchase?) have lots of 'simple facts' which really are not facts at all.

Everyone seems to think they need a diesel to save money so they end up spending thousands and thousands of pounds they've not really got to 'save money'. I dont understand it. The first rule of saving money is minimise expenditure not spend loads to get something cheap to run.

Fox - I would agree that if you are purely looking for the cheapest way of getting from A-B, Golfs doesn't make much sense as they are more expensive to buy than their market rivals. However, anyone that browses this forum is going to be a car enthusiast to some extent, which means they will be looking something more than 'a cheap set of wheels' and won't necessarily make the most rational buying decision. Sniper obviously wanted a Golf, and the one he chose ticked all the right boxes for him, which is fair enough.

I've personally loved the things since I was a kid :D. Four out of the seven cars I 've owned have been fast Golfs. Also owned a Corrado, a CTR and 325Ci which on paper should have been better cars, but none of them worked out that way for me.

I agree with you ream98rm and would probably have left it until the OP then started moaning that he's in loads of debt and had to increase his debt to 10k just to buy the Golf, and then started saying how he couldnt buy a 1k petrol car becuase he needs to save money with a diesel, it just seems a bit.. meh.

Oh, get a Bora. It'll be newer and nicer inside.

Agreed on the newer aspect ( I am quite shocked at just how little you can pick up a relatively new bora for) but how can it be nicer inside if its the same as the golf?

The 110 engine responds really well to chipping, I had one in my Passat, it went really well much faster than a stock 130PD and a 140PD for that matter. get that done and you wont regret it.
