Yesterday when driving from watford to surrey the gearbox in my 51 plate vw polo gave way. It became to difficult to place the car into a gear and required a great deal of force. There was also a loud rattling noise from the engine as well and whenever i can to a stop you would also hear a whining. Now im guessing the gearbox is knackered and will need to be replaced. Was wondering how much this will set me back.

thanks

I paid £250 cash to have a gearbox fitted on an old Mk3 golf. That was £150 fitting and £100 for a used gearbox, i needed it as cheap as possible so I willingly bought a 100,000 gearbox. I would expect you'll have to pay quite a bit more.

You will also be advised to replace the clutch while you're at it, since effectively this can be done just for the price of the part.

However get it looked at by someone who knows what they're doing. It might just be a clutch problem.

Do you have the benefit of a good independent VW specialist near you? You know, the little outfits you'll find on industrial estates who only fix VW. Get a quote from those guys.

Rgds

Ill guess its the 1.4. Check its not the pedal box before you do anything! (is clutch higher than brake?)

As for the price, depends whats wrong - common fault is the input selector shaft, but then other things may need replacing too
