Just bought all my bits for a new build and have decided to go with W7 64 bit and 8Gb of RAM. I bought an OEM copy of W7 Home Premium, but it's only come with the 64 Bit disc. I thought that it would come with both 32 bit and 64 bit discs?
I want to be prepared incase my hardware (particullary my Canon multi-function printer) won't work with 64 bit. I understand that the licence key I have will work with both versions, is that correct, and can I download a 32 bit ISO that I can then use of requred? I had a hunt on the MS web site but couldn't spot a 32 bit ISO that I could download.

Unless you have access to an official Microsoft channel like Technet or MSDN there's no legitimate way to download alternative media. Saying that you want to be running 64bit anyway, and chances are you won't have any problems with your hardware, my Canon all-in-one works straight out of the box with no additional drivers.

Daegan. I have a MF3110 and have had a real good hunt but I can't find a 64 bit driver anywhere for it. What model do you have, as perhaps the driver for that one will work for the 3110?

I found with my Pixma iP4000 that they did have drivers for win7 64bit ... but that you had to click on a "windows update" button when installing the printer and from there tell windows to look for updated drivers for canon printers.

This worked ... sort of different to previous experience where either drivers were in the OS install or you got the from the manufacturers website. Here they seem to be rolled into win7 - but not necessarily directly on the install disk!

N.b. I think canon have a fairly comprehensive list of all the products which are supported under win7 somewhere - came across it on a photo site as it contains details of cameras as well as printers, scanners etc

all that ram would be such a waste if you was to use 32bit

Agreed, but if my printer won't work I'll revert back to 32 bit OS and will sell the extra ram. I've got a few spare toner carts for the printer just now so would rather not change it at this moment in time if I can help it.

The Retail and Upgrade packs come with both 32 bit and 64 bit media, but the OEM packs only have one or the other, since they are intended for OEM's, not end users.

With Vista it used to be possible to buy the other version of the disc from MS, but that may no longer work.

If you install your 64 bit OS, don't enter the activation key when you do the install. You can use it for 30 days without entering a key or activating it. That way, if you do find the printer doesn't work, you can sell the 64 bit package and put the proceeds towards the 32 bit version.

Personally I would buy a new printer and use all that memory!
