going on from some questions raised in the cpu forum i thought id put my power meter to use and get some proper power figures from it rather than relying on hwinfo:

spec:

ryzen 5900x power limit raised to 165w
4 sticks kingston hyperx ddr4 3200 @ 2733mhz (4 x 16gb)
msi x470 gaming plus max mobo
nvidia rtx a2000 6gb
dvd writer
500gb gigabyte nvme
1tb kioxia nvme
960gb micron 5100 max sata
1.92tb micron 5200 pro sata
scythe fuma 2 with 2 fans and case has 4 fans in it
corsair hx620w psu

results:

powered off: 1.5w
sleep mode: 2.7w
desktop idle: 56w
prime95 small fft avx: 218.3w
furmark: 181w
prime+furmark: 290w

general observations, system was around 140w power pull on booting up, web browsing around 100w with spikes going to 130w at times and dropping to 90w at times. opening up apps like word etc its hitting 135w for short durations. @Bencher was right this platform does seem to pull more power than an intel one when doing light stuff.
hwinfo says 161w in prime95 but as you can see thats cpu only mobo, ram etc takes up power too so at the wall figure was 218w on cpu prime95 only.
iv got an old power supply so wondering if those new platinum rated ones would draw less overall from the wall and at low loads.
i use sleep mode all the time since boot up is instant.
maybe this info will help someone when choosing a psu. i clearly dont need 1kw psu but then again my system is low end.
hope others can chime in with power meter results too.
