Is there any way I can feasibly buy a bigger TV and have it fit in the alcove below without it looking stupid/too big??

I know the pic is dire but its the only thing I had on my Google photos to give an idea of the space.

Current TV is a 32 incher and we have it on an angle as shown in the pic but i was thinking would I be able to get something bigger if we mounted it on a bracket in the alcove which then let us pull the TV out a bit as we are limited by the space on top of the units for it to stand on.

Would the chimney breast end up blocking part of the screen thus making it a pointless endeavour? Or would it just stick out too far and look stupid? Am I destined to wallow in 32 inches of pathetic glory?!

Doesn't look like you use the fireplace so mount all your AV equipment in there either on shelves or a custom unit, run wires up the chimney and through to the TV mounted on the chimney breast.

If the sofa is on the right hand side, positioning TV above fireplace may not be ideal. Plus, as he's just moved in and requested an alcove solution, he may have plans for the fire?

We only had fitted shelves in the alcove not hosting the TV, allowing us to place the TV on a regular free-standing tv unit that can sit a little proud of the alcove providing more width.

Without knowing the dimensions of the room and how much space there is to play with it'll be hard to suggest other options than above the fire.

Is the room big enough to be able to have a larger TV without it seeming too 'in your face'?

Can it be mounted on one of the side walls?

You could feasibly have an alcove unit designed and built that would allow the TV to extend further into the room but if the room is small it would look pants.

need to know room size furniture layout and plans for the fireplace!

As a guess I would say bigger TV in the corner but on an extendable wall bracket is your best/only answer keeping the current layout.

Sorry. Log burner going in the fireplace by the end of the year and I simply hate it when people have their TV's mounted above fireplaces.

Will try and get a better picture of the room now so you've got an idea of what its like.

The only real options you would have are:

1) Projector behind the big sofa onto the fireplace.

2) have a unit build that fully extends up the alcove, with a large piece of wood stretching across the alcove that you then mount an adjustable tv bracket too.

The problem is that if you go larger the ideal place would be to the right of the fireplace but it'll be awkward viewing for anyone on the 2 seater. If you go the other side it will have to stick out so it will be sticking past the pillar and the fireplace.

Other than switching the lounge with what looks like the dining room there are really any options to go bigger without it being in the way.

You could get a bracket on the left hand wall of the alcove to push the tv out of the alcove and go bigger - just means the tv will be in the room so probably wouldn't look great.

I take it the room is open plan so no fourth wall as option?

Yeh room is open plan so no other wall to use.

I think i'm going to just have to see if I can source a bigger TV and offer it up to the alcove in different positions to see how it would look on an arm.

If that doesn't result in anything fruitful i'm doomed to a life of 32" sadness!

Get a sheet of cardboard cut it to size and paint it black much easier to manoeuvre than a TV and can be easily adjusted so you can try some different sizes! Don't think you will ever get anything massive to look great but a 37-40 will probably look fine sticking out of the alcove and if you get an adjustable mount you will at least be able to move it in and out as needed.

I'd be inclined to mount it on a swing arm and have it outside alcoves ever so slightly - a thin tv won't stick out too much at all so you shouldn't walk into it?

Horribly lazy image editing

edit - damn it, wot joelk2 said (maybe without mounting a portable sun under it though, the fusion is a pita to get out the carpet)
