Hi,

I'm gonna install Xp on an old laptop. I want to install the smallest amount possible, what is called an "Xp lite" install.

I was wondering how to do this, and what i can exclude. Also must i install SP2?

Thanks

Ross

You want this

Download to any current version of Windows, then stick the CD for XP (that you were going to use in the old laptop) into your current machine.

Run Nlite, add any service pack CDs you might have (worth putting SP2 on), then go through and tweak the settings. It will advise you of what you can safely get rid of and if anything is dependant on any other process or service.

one last question...it won't affect the current version of windows will it (as in the one currently on my PC)?

thanks mate

Nlite will create a new install CD for you with the options you have chosen to add or remove it will in no way affect the install you have on the PC you make the cd on, it will only affect the laptop when you goto install it.

You can get the sizes down stupidly low.

There is people who get the ISO it produces down to around 150mb!

yup, I'm currently using a 300mb XP Pro, but still has everything I need on it.

Its the most stable system i've ever used and am considering doing it for my home server. My uptime on this pc is currently 81 days and that was when I did my last NLite install! ;)

its is hard trying to work out what to and what not to remove, as I have no drivers for the laptop...i just want windows to load its own.

Not really going to work for all things. XP Pro (even with SP2) might not cover all areas of the laptops drivers. Give it a go though, you can always save the profile you are creating and alter it later on.

the newest nlite gets it right down under 100mb -xpsp2
i've been using it for about 3 years now, keeps getting better and better!

I read somewhere that they don't plan a vista version, as there is microsoft tools which do practically the same thing.
