Hi guys, not sure if anyone is aware of this, ive done a search but couldnt find anything.
I for one, have wanted to go on a track day for a long time, but my car isnt really up to it and i dont want the wear and tear associated with track days.
I was looking through PH and saw this.. http://www.track-club.com/newsarticles.htm#tasterdays
I emailed them, and was told that there was no age limit as long as you had common sense and a licence
The link above is just the taster days for novices....
You can become a year long member, then use your "points" to hire cars for the day - such as Lotus exige, Caterham 260, clio 182 cup, even a radical plus a few others. The number of points each session costs depends on, car, time of event (off peak is cheaper), time of year etc.
Or you could just go - drive and arrive, and have your choice of car for the day all to yourself. here are the prices... http://www.track-club.com/cars/track_club_hire_rates.htm
Seems like a great idea and I will definately be using them in the next month or so.
Here is the email I just recieved regarding TASTER days - which start from £299 IIRC
Tom,
there is no age limit as such - provided you have a full UK (not automatic!)
driving license then you can attend a track day.
With the track day taster days driving is done with an instructor during the
initial
sessions but then subject to the instructor's opinion/judgement you drive the
cars
on your own.
The function of the instructors in the initial sessions is really twofold:
1) It gives them an opportunity to teach you basic cornering theory (line
selection,
when to brake, clipping points etc) as well as allowing you to get to grips with
other concepts such as weight transfer
2) It gives you an opportunity to lean the track which is essential (e.g. you
need
to know where you're going! in order to drive fast)
Normally we would start you off in something like a Caterham (front engined,
rear
wheel drive) since these are easy to drive fast, have very communicative
steering
and are very forgiving of errors. We would then typically move you into
something
mid-engined (for example Lotus Elise/Exige/Renault Spider) - these ultimately
off
great performance but need more "finesse" because management of weight transfer
becomes much more critical.
I wouldn't be too worried about the suitability of your current car in terms of
track days. For the initial few times that you go out on track you will not (in
theory at least) exceed the limits of your current car. It will all be about
learning the track, gaining good practice in cornering theory etc. We've seen
all
kinds of things at track days from diesel vans right the way through to single
seaters.
