Wanting a new car, talk to me. (noob questions)

I agree with the Leon comment as it happens.
I also agree that the standard Cupra wheels are horrid.

I just think that cause its a VW people are willing to pay stupid prices due to the badge.
Im not saying the Golf is a bad car just the Mk4 is. The Mk5 are much better and doesnt look terrible like the Mk4.

Personnally I would look into getting a Leon as well and see what you think about it. It is a nice car and better looking.

Im not saying the GTi Turbo engine is bad. Just the shape of the car is a big harsh and to me it felt like a boat when going round corners.

Well I wouldn't pay 4.5 for it.

So the fact that is has a lot of optional extras and has only done 49k miles doesn't really matter? I was looking through glass's and was trying to figure it out, the recaro leather option was 2 grand when new.

I guess I'm a little naive when it comes to these things.

Overpriced to the MAXX!!!

If you are going to go down, firstly read up on the car you're willing to purchase, go on the forums dedicated to them and ask questions. Remember it's your money unless you're getting a loan, you will have to pay it back, so don't make any quick decisions.

Take someone down like others have said who has mechanical knowledge, surely there must be someone you know?

And look around even auctions if you want, sometimes you can pick something decent up there for little money. But £4200 for a 2002 golf is too much.

To answer your original question I wouldn't be spending £185 for the RAC to inspect it.

As for 4.5k for a 53 plate Golf 1.8T, sounds like the going rate to me, they do hold their value well, and are better specced than the older models.

This is precisely why I asked for budget and potential spec.

The advice on here is good if a little blunt :p

Have a good think about it and if you still want to proceed with this, or any other option, my offer stands.

I did, they suggested I get the 180ps lol.

I really appreciate the suggestions and comments guys, I need to have a serious think about what I actually want.

They are overpriced German tripe in my eyes. The Mk4 Golf is horrid and I have never liked them. Id much rather buy a Seat Leon 1.8T 20v and save some money. You can get hold of a 2002 1.8T leon for around £2000 nowadays.

You can get a Toledo 20vt or V5 for even less than that!

I bought my non-T 2.0 Mk4 GTI last year for £2600. Put it through a full service and MOT which it passed with two blown bulb replacements (I'm sure they made that up though, they were fine before).

They did notice some things on inspection though which might be worth keeping an eye out.

The catalytic converter heatshield is held on by rust. The bolts have rotted away and I was told to expect some rattling but I can't hear anything yet. Apparently they can only replace it when the cat is being replaced which is an 800 quid job?

Also my driver door sensor developed a fault. The car doesn't know when the door is open so it doesn't beep when I leave my headlights on, it doesn't turn on the cabin lights when I open the door, and the little red hazard light on the bottom of the door doesn't turn on. These things are minor, but what it also means is that the central locking kicks in when it doesn't detect the door has been opened. Nearly locked my key inside but luckily the window was open :) VW would have charged me £350 to replace the whole door locking mechanism, but apparently it's just a short somewhere.

My fianceé's Golf had a relatively common problem with the rear doors where the latch doesn't catch the door when you slam it, so effectively the doors won't stay shut and just come open on their own.

Apparently its caused by a plastic component breaking and you have to replace the whole locking unit (clowns pricing seems familiar so may be the same part).

I can't believe such an elementary failure exists - how long have VW been making cars now and they can't design a reliable latching mechanism.

Lets not talk about the emissions problems, rough running and erratic idle.

I'd also been let to believe that the V5 had very similar performance to the 1.8T but with substantially higher fuel costs.
And the Toledo is ugly!
