Just seen the above film on sky and am a little confused! 2 questions

1) How/Why do they all die in the end?

2) How come when the crowd steal the car, none of the cars work (suggesting an EMP pulse) but the cafe lights do!!

In the book and original film which was far better they die from a simple cold, as their immune system couldn't handle our bugs.

yeah as Lay Z has said the machines / aliens don't have any immunities against our every day germs so germs etc killed them off.

On the cafe lights question it was either a gen as suggested or one of many movie bodge ups :p

They die from getting ill in the modern film too.

Modern film still didn't do the book justice IMO though. The lack of "thunderchild" was an upset :(

Yeah, I also remeber the birds attacking them?

Not attacking, just landing on, suggesting that their sheilds are no longer working ;)

Because a super-advanced alien civilisation would really just walk around in potentally lethal, unknown atmospheres with no protection or breathing apparatus wouldn't they... :D

It was HG Wells got to give him some slack, as those sort of ideas obviously never crossed his mind and he decided on something simpler :p

Ray suggests the EMP type thingy damaged the starter motor. therefor the electricity to the cafe lights could have come back on but the cars were still broke. My theory at least.

The power worked in that area because the aliens hadnt landed there, they moved there afterwards - same deal as the kids' house, power was fine.
There were no cars there because nobody would have broken down there, since there was no EMP there.

The aliens had no immune system capable of dealing with human bacteria, and were thusly rendered ill, then dead.

The musical by Jeff Wayne is infinitely superior :)

It wasnt just human bacteria, it was all bacteria. Listen to the CD of war of the worlds (As helium_junkie said already). A masterpiece imo. it explains the story much better than that cruddy film. The film was really rather inaccurate.

not really as the EMP will only kill stuff thats on at the time I believe so he probably only started using the cam after everything kicked off. But saying that why did all the solonoids on the cars get fried then if the car's werm't in use at the time ?

EMP would have knackered the lot, including the camcorder iirc. Just one of those things.

I went backstage at War of the Worlds live and met jeff wayne, amazing show.

so if they died from the bacteria when they started killing everyone...

how come they didnt die from bacteria when they burried the machines...

surely whenever they did that there would have been bacteria around that they werent immune too :p ?

then why in so many films such as the matrix and Ocians 11 (I think with the pinch ?) to name a few where EMP's are detonated they do the thing where they flick all electrical stuff off, detonate the pulse and that saves all their equipment and toasts everything else

Think they do the same in Broken arrow where it brings down the chopper but the jeap is uneffected. Also thinks theres one in one the the Mission Impossible films.

Without getting stupidly technical, emp only affects certain circuitry and components. things like capacitors hold electrical charge regardless of whether or not they are switched on for example. Plus different EMPs have different ranges.
