War of worlds

Just wondering how many of the posters above, that compare this to the msuical version, have actually read the original.

It's not based on the musical even though it shamelessly steals bits/ideas from it.

The book is magnificent and as several people have said to make the film set as it was written, would be superb.

have seen the original but its so long since i did it would be unfair for me to compare them.

i tried listening to the musical, ive got it on cd, but i just cant get into stuff like that. seems very weird to me.

i thoroughly enjoyed the spielberg version. watched it loads of times. yet more proof that Tom Cruise cannot make a bad movie.

I watched the movie last night on Sky Movies for the first time - I was pretty impressed and everything seemed really cool - what really impressed me was how well that little kid acted (Cruise's daughter - forgot the charcter name) that was superb.

The way the story line was going it seemed as if it was going to be a lose-lose situation for everyone but I guess everything worked out in the end :)

nope

im a Cruise fan. honestly dont think he has made one film that wasnt entertaining.

Tom doesn't make films. If you mean he "makes" the film as in is the defining element then you probably aren't looking deep enough.

I could be questioning you for no reason here and if so kindly give me a slap.

I actually paid to see it in the cinema, first time in years, talk about rip off, was trying not to laugh at most of it.

Nothing like the book, see if you can get the pendragon pictures version, very cheesy acting and special effects but its 99% to the book, and its set in Victorian England, and the thunderchild and Martian flying machine is in it.
Love Spielberg movies but he really let me down with this effort.

I understand and respect peoples opinions on liking the new Spielberg film, but compare WotW to one of his earlier films, like Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

You can see that he really didnt give a damn about the book/musical or even the story in general, it was rushed and very poorly cast/directed imo.

Whereas if you watch Close Encounters, that film is a pure classic and one of my favorite films.

Plus the aliens looked more realistic in a 1977 film than rubbish CG from a 2006 film :(

The Pendragon version was a good idea however IMHO it was pants, waaaay to many running scenes ;) I had some friends come round to watch it and had to switch it off before being beaten to death. The good thing about it is that we went to see the Spielberg version afterwards and actually enjoyed it.

unless ive misread his post :/
No, you read it how I read it. Its just I think he must've had some other motive for saying what he did. I can't believe someone wouldn't be able to understand what you put.

I've just bought the live on stage version, and wow, its great to see the album come to life with a 30ft fighting machine on stage etc.

Might go and see it live in Cardiff next december when the tour comes around here.

Yes I heard Freemans vague 'explanation' which consisted of zooming into a leaf and I still couldnt work out how they died. For a movie with a budget of 150 million dollars directed by Spielburg the ending was absolutely awful and left me unfulfilled.

So this Explanation at the end or the film...

VOICE: From the moment the invaders arrived, the moment they ate, and drank, they were doomed. after all man’s weapons and devices had failed, by the tiniest creatures that God, in his wisdom, put upon this Earth.

We enter the water droplet.

EXT./INT. WATER DROPLET

We are suddenly surrounded by tiny, microscopic organisms.

VOICE: At the toll of a billion deaths, man had earned his immunity, his right to survive amongst this planets infinite organisms.

A beat, we are embursed in the DNA of the microbes.

VOICE: Because no man lives, or dies, in vein.

Doesn't explain it!... couldn't have been listening too hard!!...

Great Film but not a patch on the Book!!
