Hi OCUK,

I've recently moved into a new flat. It came with a washing machine - a Butler BWA 1720, but no manual. My old one came with helpful settings like 'Quick Wash', but I can't figure this one out.

Does anyone here have the same model? Can anyone here figure out how to work it? I'm running out of clothes; I might have to go to work in black tie soon

Thanks!

As I repair washing machines I'd best put you out of your misery :)

Looking at the buttons going left to right...........

800/1200 is the spin speed, select what you want.

half load, only use if you want to wash a couple of items.

Not 100% on this one but its possibly extra rinse.

On/off switch.

Now the dials, on the left is wash temperature. As each wash programme has a preset temperature it automatically washes to this dial gives the option of washing at a lower temp but not higher. My advice would to be to leave it on 40.

Next dial is tumble dryer drying time. The dark line is for full heat, the other half heat. If you set this then it will follow on to tumble dry after the wash but possibly not on every programme.

Finally the programme selector.
1. is prewash but be wary as it looks like it does this then goes straight into prog 2 which will be "whites 95C", you have been warned.

3. is 60c cotton

4. 40c cotton, this is the prog I recommend you to use with temp dial set to 40 or less as you prefer.

5. not sure as I can't see from pic where it is but probably the start of rinses.

6. final rinse where it takes fabric conditioner

7. full spin speed, unless you selected the 800 option.

The next hyroglyphic that looks like bacon is the tumble dryer setting, if you set the TD dial it will carry on to dry.

From here I can't give you any accurate info as it depends on how the manufacturer has configured the gentler programmes.

8,9 and 10 will most likely be 60,50 and 40c delicate programmes but don't trust that.

11,13,16,18 appear to be spin cycles.

12,14,15,17 are specialist programmes like woolens, quick wash etc but as it may include a "special whites" I would steer clear unless you feel adventurous :)

So, if you stick with prog 4 and 40 c you wont go far wrong with most fabrics.

Use 3 and 60c as a hot wash, 9 and 30c for delicates.

I've wondered about this for a very long time. Does it generally hold for all washing machines?

Will be good to know I can't shrink my normal clothes if I forget to turn the temp down after washing towels! :)

Yep, thats how they does things but manufacturers are currently coming up with some pretty sad ideas so it may not be forever.
