Hi all

OK just a quick question. I have loads of videos on my hard drive, in all different formats divx, avi, etc etc

I normally watch all this stuff using vlc on my 20.1" dell monitor and everything looks fine. Obviously some videos look better than others.

Now my question, if i build an under the TV computer, ie and use it with a nice big 32" Samsung HD and want to watch all the same video media will it look the same as it does on my TFT or worse because its bigger and a HDTV?

When i watch terrestrial TV on my mates big HD TV as apposed to my old real projection it looks terrible. I assume, correct my if i am wrong, this is because the big HD TV is way better than my rear projection and picks up all the imperfections and so looks worse. If my thinking is correct then surly the same would apply to my video files?

Thanks

it will look fine, may need to fiddle with ffdshow settings. May as well shove in dual tv tuners and use media centre, that way when u record freeview u will get a lovely picture. I get excellent records of MOTD

I watch divxs and avi on my 42" plasma some look great other not, it really depends on what the quality of the video is like in the first place. But it will defo look better on a 32" hdtv than a 20" monitor.

Not always, your average 32" HDTV is typically only 720p, that is a panel resolution of 1366x768 (but almost always has to be driven at 1280x768).

That said, plus the greater diagonal screen size, the per-pixel size is greater, meaning videos would look worse than on a higher resolution and smaller screen.

That said, it'll look just fine, DVB-T on low bit rate channels (Dave for example) looks awful, but on better channels it looks fine.

Your content will look OK but not fantastic, but it won't be distracting (providing you're not watching YouTube or something :p)

See this is what i thought. My TFT is smaller and higher resolution so a 350 meg avi file looks pretty good. If you show the same video on a 32" surly the same amount of information stretched on a bigger tv will look worse?

The pixels are bigger on a hdtv so to experience the same visual quality you do on a monitor , you need to be further away from it.

Yup thats fine, on a monitor you'd be sitting quite close, at a desk, your TV you'd be right across the room, like i said 350meg for about an hour or so looks fine on my 32" TV, (720p looks even better though :p)

You can make lot of difference by having things set up right - display brightness, constrast etc, then codec/graphics configuration for anti aliasing, deinterlacing mode etc (im no expert on these but i have seen a huge difference on the same hardware and same video just by altering the setup config)
