I have just received the 500GB My Book World NAS and it does not seem to work under Vista.

There is no mention of this in your description of the unit and the unit is therefore useless to me. To be honest I think that a shop such as overclockers should have warned me about this, it is pretty fundamental.

The software just says that it is only compatible with XP and will not load.

This seems sufficient for me to return the unit, or am I missing something?

You don't need the software on the drives as such - they're just there as an extra help.

If you didn't research that the software was only XP compatiable, then you're as much to fault. They can't hold your hand through every purchase, although I do think the descriptions could be a bit less 'copy and paste' sometimes.

What do you want the drive to do?

I don't know of any issues and it should be Vista compliant as far as I am aware but will look into this for you AM.

We generally do not get products out of sealed boxes as we simply don't have the time plus if you were the one to get an open box product, you would probably want to return it under the Distance Selling Act.

Is there any error messages or particular problem you get when trying to install and I will speak to WD first thing in the morning.

Actually you do need to use the software on "drives such as this", if I am wrong I would welcome being told why but the documentation says that you must use the software and I could not work out how not to do so.

I just want to use the drive, that is all, nothing fancy. On the WD website there is a workaround that means that you do not have to use the software but that involves using the software to change the setup options.

The software "WD Anywhere Access" just will not install, if you try to force an install it says that it is only compatible with XP or 2000.
