Not mine thankfully but as the suits I currently own are well out of date and probably don't fit anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to get something proper tailored up..
My last suit came from the "two suits for a ton" type shop

Basically I'm looking for recommendations of where to start looking for something really smart.

What price should I be looking to pay for something decent these days?
thinking £500 should cover it but what do I know??

I got a suit hired from Moss Bros for my sister's wedding. They measured up for the fitting, and it was a great suit, very comfortable and smart. It was around the £250 mark i think. I'd recommend you have a look if there's one nearby you.

Edit: Just had a quick look, and there's one in Gloucester:

I just spent a bucket load on a really nice suit in John Lewis. Their fitters are great and altered it to suit. It's a William Hunt from Saville Row. I don't wear a suit often so I chose one that wasn't high fashion styled like Ted Baker for example. I needed one that's more classic styled that will still look great in 10 years time and not go out of fashion or have me thinking omg what did I look like 70's dad :D

Do you want to own or hire?
Where else will the suit be used if you choose to buy? (rarely / office / legal / city etc)
What is your absolute limit on spend?
Have you been recommended a very good tailor in your area? If not, can you travel?

£500 will get you an above-average suit which will last and will be well made. Not brilliant but good.

What style do you have in mind?

I have had a few very nice tailored suits from Slaters mens wear. Worth a look

Looking for something fashionable really, although I don't use it that often I would like to buy, not rent.

Price limit depends on how good it looks.. :D
Will spend more than £500 if it "looks worth it" (read that as, if fits like a suit does on Tom Jones, then I'll be happy. ;) )

If you are looking for a truly tailored suit then £500 might get you a nice pair of shoes to go with it, but not a proper suit from Saville Row. I personally LOVE Ozwald Boatang who is really the greatest in my eyes when it comes to the modern interpretation of a suit.

If you want to have a nice suit there are plenty of places, and you can get a mad to fit for £500, but thats different to made to measure. Austin Reed, T M Lewin and other similar gents shops are worth a nose for off the peg stuff of quality too.

If you want THE BEST suits then it has to be Savile Row really http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savile_Row

Oddly similiar to my dilemma. 22, never owned a suit, sisters wedding in August. I need something. M&S look best. Only thing is they're all look cut with high collars and extra long almost like a trenchcoat for some reason. Must be the in thing at the moment. I like a nice high cut with normal collar and just under the belt, don't seem to be any around for some reason.

And my chest is also too broad for my shoulders. Size 38 fits my shoulders but my chest fits a 40 or even 42. And my stomach is slimmer too. Gar..

There's a great article by a Savile Row trained tailor about how to get the best suit for various different budgets from £200 - £2000. Have a read of English Cut
