Hi,

Most of you know that i'm hoping to buy a 205 GTi sometime soon. I've been having a casual search around, and i'm seeing prices in the £600 region for both the 1.6 and 1.9. Couple of questions:

1. Realistically, whats the difference between the 1.6 and 1.9? Would it be worth my while going for a 1.9, or should i wait around for a good 1.6?

2. Insurance - Is there a massive difference on insurance between the 1.6 and 1.9? or would I need to be doing quotes on both?

With regards to buying - should I be looking for anything in particular, that could cost a lot of money to sort out, or is it just regular car things to check for, oil level etc?

One more thing - i'm also thinking about getting a loan to cover both car and insurance - is this a good idea? or should I save up longer, but have to pay the insurance monthly?

Thanks :)

IIRC the 1.9 is a stroked 1.6 engine.

the 1.9 has obviously got more grunt but all the old reviews say that the 1.6 was the best combination. i think it would be best if you drove a couple of each to get a feeling for them. :)

The 1.9's more outright fast...but the 1.9 I drove seemed to tramline a lot, especially under heavy acceleration - then again, it was pretty used and abused. Drove a stock, very clean 1.6 and that was a very, very nice car.

I'd like to drive a clean 1.9 again someday, to see wether if it was just a combination of old suspension (then again, it did have PAS as an upgrade) or wether they're all like it - but again, I've heard people say similar.

Anyone? :)
