Weird and frustrating Nokia contact issue

A friend of mine just text with her new number, so I updated the contact info I have saved for, as I've done millions of times in the past.

However, when she texts me it still shows as a number, rather than with her name. I saved the number directly from the text so it has to be correct, but to be sure I've manually typed it anyway, still no joy. I then deleted all reference to her from my phone, and manually added it again, still no joy.

If I address a new text to her from my contacts, it sends it fine and shows her name in the Sent Items box. However when she replies it only shows her full number, not her name.

I don't get it! It's 10000% the right number against her name in my contacts list, but it refuses to register this when she texts me.

I've rebooted the phone, shouted at it a lot and called it some names but it just won't play the game. Any ideas?

I experienced a similar problem with my N95 when I had it; eventually it boiled down to the fact I had like 2,000 messages in my inbox i.e. loads.

I deleted a good 1,800 ish and after that the names started displaying again. Worth a shot?

It sounds like you've got two contacts with the same number in your phone. If a number is shared between contacts, your phone will show the number for incoming texts and the name for outgoing texts.

Perhaps go through your contacts and double-check that the number isn't used twice?

It's a 6120 - fairly basic but until now it hasn't put a foot wrong.

I keep my inbox/sentbox clear so it can't be that.

I've deleted all reference to her from my phone, and my SIM, then tried manually adding her, and saving her as a new contact from a new message she sent but it still won't work.

Nail on the head! I've just been through my contacts and there was one right at the end called (unnamed) which had her number in. No idea where it came from, must've not saved correctly when I initially amended her contact details.

Cheers fellas!
