My sister bought him this car for £50 needs a little body work (lights are smashed) apart from that nothing wrong with it.

its a Rover 218 Turbo 1994 (I think thats the correct year). Haven't seen it or heard it run yet but from the sounds of it, its a very nice first car and for a bargain aswell! came from my dads yard.

Can anyone tell me any common problems these cars have or anything he should look out for. Its done 84k miles, have no idea if it has a service history etc.

Will post some piccies when i see it.

Just thought the Rover drivers would like to no aswell :p

218 turbo, will be a diesel then!

Check for rusty arches and general wear tbh, cant imagine the performance will be awe-inspiring but should return half decent mpg.

How big is your dad's yard? wouldn't happen to have a mint 70's Porche hidden somewhere in there for £50 would he? :p

I thought the diesel's were Honda lumps?

Nope.

Rover used 1.6 Honda petrol engines in the earlier 216 models.

Then, the 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 litre petrol 600's were Honda. The only Rover engine to be used in the 600 was the 2 litre Turbo in the 620Ti.

Rover used a mixture of Peugeot diesel and Rover L-series engines. I think the Mk2 series were Peugeot and when the Mk3 200 and 400 were brought out, they switched to the L series.

i've got one of these (well, a 400, but essentially the same car)

they're good motors, mine has done 187k and is still decent. one thing to watch out for though is the cooling pipe running along the driver's side from the back of the engine to the rad. it's made of steel and prone to rusting

at 84k, unless you KNOW the cambelt has been done, get it done. the interval on XUD engined rovers is 72k, so if it hasnt been done, it'll be dire on 84k

The owner of the company i work for is so tight he paid £25 for a citroen AX and moaned that it was not taxed!!!!!!

The petrol in the tank was worth more then the car!!

I found out to my delight a while back that my cambelt had covered almost 92k after finding out the previous owners lie - If you are planning on keeping it then do the belt :)
