Great pricing there, I think these are the best media players IMO, the gui is slick, and WD push out updates regularly.

The wireless works well, with a cheap n300 adapter I can get throughput of 9MBs, not to shabby

I own the Western Digital TV Live HD Media Player, however I don't see these prices as particularly competitive. Particularly if they are pre-order only discounts and so will be priced higher when the stock arrives.

The player itself is excellent and I would recommend it though - WD provide excellent firmware support.

Looking at google shopping I see the prices as about on par with other retailers,

The hub has a good price, don't forget loyal members get free shipping so that always works out to be cheaper.

The lack of BBC IPlayer support is the only thing I miss with mine Firmware updates out often but they never seem to add it. Noticed that BBC Iplayer available on my Samsung Blu-Ray player now so it should be possible with this device aswell.

I think it is a licensing thing.
for example, all of the other internet catchup stations are available on iOS devices apart from iplayer.

I am meeting with WD this week so will feedback this issue to them

I owned the Western Digital TV Live HD Media Player in the past and then took it back after 9 months as it just couldnt play everythink i wanted so got the Acer Revo much better imo.

Keep the firmware upto date, and it will play 'everythink'.

Had mine for a year now and I've not got any complaints

I use a Linksys DNA2200 which has a build in DVD player. I have owned this for around 5-6 years too.

It wirelessly streams from all of my PC's via my wireless network. The benefit of this is it uses the codec's installed on the PC that it is streaming from. So there is no issue of file format compatiblities, as you just install the codec if your missing it on your PC. As I stream from my PC in the spare bedroom to my TV in my main bedroom then with a wireless N connection I can easily play 1080p full 7.1 audio videos with no issues.

Saying that, 99% of all codecs are installed with the use of the K-lite Codec pack. It streams DTS and AC3 audio too.

The only issue I had with it was when windows 7 launched, the standard K-lite codec pack didnt work on some file formats, and I had to find "alternative codecs" but K-lite released an updated Windows 7 64bit codec pack addon which eventually fixed the issue (took about 6 months - from launch of windows 7)

they play 99% of file formats which most people need.
chippy08 - obviously it didn't apply to yourself in your specific usage scenario.

I watched Law Abiding Citizen on mine last night, which is both x264 and DTS... It played fine. Absolutely fine.

Like i said, it plays 'everythink' i've thrown at it.

Might upgrade from the live to the hub, sick of leaving my pc on whenever I wanna watch somethng. Or I could get a NAS but I like the idea of the hub having it's own HD.

How exactly do these work? If I have a network setup on my computer - do these players download the content off the network and store the data on the Media players themselves?
