So the girlfriend's old 21" CRT has gone pop so she's after a new TV. It'd be used for mainly watching DVDs and the odd bit of telly. So all SD stuff. I've seen a lot of LCD playing SD stuff and there seems to be a huge variation in the picture quality! So what's good? The speakers also need to be decent as she hasnt got any separates.

I'm also aware the larger sets (32"+) probably have better panels but she really thinks that'd be overkill, plus i'm not sure of her budget. So what brands should i be looking at? Panasonic? Sony?

Thanks for any pointers

Place a template the size of a 32" screen where your girlfriend will site her new TV then sit back. If the template does seem to big reduce it to 26" but allow the larger size a few days before a decision is made as the template will appear to shrink unless, it really is overkill.

IIRC from threads on here then the Samsung is a favorite @ 26" so too is the Sony unsure of model numbers though.
Another good resource would be AVForums.

Research then research some more before you let go of the cash.

Good luck.

I picked up a Sony 26T3000 a few weeks ago for £430. It's a great tv and better than the similar Panasonic option (26LMD70) which I have downstairs.

SD is ok but you will need to change the factory settings to make the picture quality better. HD is outstanding as you would expect and the speakers are satisfactory (certainly good enough for your gf by the sounds of it)
