What age did you set up a will?

Spawned off the tragic death thread, I'm curious if/when people wrote their will. It seems somewhat morbid, given I'm only 27, but I've been wondering whether its about time I set one up, particularly as I've just inherited a fairly reasonable amount..

So fellow OCUKers when did you set your will up and what caused you to do it? Have you left most of your stuff to your family or have your friends got a lot too?

Also, if in the event I don't have a will, am I right in guessing that my estate would be automatically left to my next of kin to distribute as they wish?

I'm 31 and still haven't. Having kids spurs you on to thinking about that stuff, though, so I must get around to it at some point.

I don't like the idea of paying solicitors for it, though. I should be able to write it myself on a napkin! ;) But yeah, I guess there's a lot of 'fine print' to include that they know about.

I haven't got a will although having recently inherited a house after my father's death it seems sensible to start thinking about these kind of things.

DIY kit or solicitor is the main question I guess.

EDIT: 25 y/o

36 (about 3 weeks ago i made a will)

if you die with no will it goes to probate and is split evenly between next of kin

if you jsut want a simple will you can get a easy template online or from wh smiths...

if its more complicated than give everything to your best mate or girlfriend it get it done properly,

also if its likley to get disputed ie you want your GF to have it all but you think your brother may want it its also best to get it done properly.. (ie by a professional)

I have a very rough draft. But have yet to finalise it. It's quite straight forward. Leave X & Y to my mother & brother and Z to several of my close friends.

I'm 22, the only reason I'm doing it so young is that much like yourself I inherited a large some of money when my father passed away which is now going in to property in October.

If I unfortunatley die in the near future I'd like to set my friends up with deposits for property and other than my word to my mother and brother there's nothing to ensure it's carried out. If it's in my will then it's more likely to be done but again not guarenteed.

I'm 26 and haven't made a will yet. I sometimes wonder whether I should, but being single and without kids I don't really have an incentive to.

Will Trivia - The shortest will in the world was just three words, "all to son."

I have nothing to leave and no one to leave it to. Think ill hold out until the day comes i have something more substantial than an old Polo, my xbox and a TV.

It's not the age as such, it's when you have accumulated assets worth distributing properly. If you are unhappy with how the intestacy rules work for your situation, then it becomes important. They are quite simple to look up online - it basically goes entirely to the first class of people that exist in the order. So all to your spouse, or all to your children, or all to your parents, then various other relatives like grandparents, siblings, uncles et al. and finally to the Crown as bona vacantia if you really have no-one.

If you are in a position where a will is worth making, you should undoubtedly go to see a solicitor. For a straightforward will it should cost very little and could save thousands of pounds and a lot of upsetting litigation after death.
