What are the current best tyres?

Just bought 2 Good Rides for my car, being fitted today for £50 each...

Yes thats how I roll! See how long it will be before these ditchfinders find me a ditch!

What car and tyre size, it'll be interesting to see what alternates are suggested...

Fiat Grande Punto Sporting
205/45/17

Last sunpower tyres or whatever where on previous lasted 37k on fronts and 45k on rears...also yet to find me a ditch.

Only problem was the rears got 'lumpy' which I guess goes hand in hand with the cheaper tyre but for wear, grip and road noise can't really complain.

Edit: I do have Avons up front so will be interesting to see how the £50 tyre compares to a £120 tyre anyway.

I use the car to get me to and from work and the occassional blast around the yorkshire countryside.

GinG, it's irrelevant that you haven't crashed 'so far'. The point that many are trying to make is that when you absolutely need it, ie emergency brake in the rain, then the better tyre is going to be more likely to save yours, or somebody else's life.

So a few weeks back in the bad weather when a car pulled out in flowing traffic (60mph) and the car infront went straight into the back of it however I managed to stop in good time. Or yesterday when a pedestrian didn't look both ways and had to emergency stop with no worries. Yeah better spending double per tyre...

I am not saying that more expensive tyres are not worth the money, in fact if I could afford to put Avons on rear I would, the problem is everything seems to have gone wrong all at once, car needs new spring, MOT, rear disks and pads, rear wheel bearing...not to mention needing to get new lawn mower pay deposit for Honeymoon etc etc I needed to save some cash where I could (savings will buy me the lawn mower!).

I do think a lot of people do jump on the band wagon before even trying some of these tyres but so far i have nothing bad to say.

But it's interesting when those who do and then come back with honest opinions and say they are junk ;)

I'd say most people who buy the cheaper stuff either:

- Have never tryed proper tyres
- Can't see past the cost saving
- Refuse to admit that buying cheap was a mistake

World of difference between ASY 2's / CS3 or 5's and the cheap stuff.

Update.

Called Toyota, it seems I got the figures slightly out.

£371.23 per alloy + £25 fitting.

£396.23 for a single wheel ?!?!!!! That is £1,600 for the set ! It's a Toyota OEM wheels, not a 911 dammit.

I am going to research into refurb and see how much and how long it takes locally. Seriously, are they taking the biscuit a bit?! £400 an alloy? I really want to just buy a set of aftermarket ones and be done with it and have 4 fresh and mint alloys on the car.

Fair enough, and I admit that I have never tried top spec tyres as never really needed to, the Avons are classed as mid/high and seem good. Day to day though for going up and down the motorway and a few A roads to get me to and from work the cheapo tyres do the job perfectly well.

I am not saying that when it comes to changing car and I move up to BMW/Audi/Merc I will use cheapo tyres as I believe in this class of car with the power at hand I agree good tyres are a must...but on a 130bhp car that goes to and from work I see no real need.

I still have it in my shed, Parcel Force was due to pick it up yesterday but they didn't turn up. I've arranged with the seller for pick up next week now. I will get my money back for it though.

It sucks because that was the cheap and easy solution ! If it had come off.

Such a shame it didn't work out, oh well least you won't be out of pocket :)

I can't really follow this logic, lets visualise the following:

Driving along a motorway doing 70mph and the ground is damp after a rain shower, all of a sudden a truck jacknifes across all three lanes.

Wouldn't you want the best possible chance of stopping, regardless of the car your in?

95% of all cars (made up stat) can do 70mph, why would a 1.2 corsa need it's stopping distance effected by fitting poor tyres, yet a BMW 330 not?

See above...was in a similar situation with a car pulling out and managed to stop without going into the back of the car in front. I am not saying not to buy expensive tyres but I am yet to experience anything that makes me wish I had spent another £100 per tyre.

I will report back in another year to see if I wished I had paid £200 more on tyres...

I'd just refurb them all mate.

Ok, found a place in Cardiff to refurb all 4, £300, same day service + £70 to straighten the buckled wheel. I've booked it in for 6th June now.

Going to drop the car off, go to Cardiff, watch a couple of movies and then go back to pick up my car. Should be good as new. I think that's the best solution and less hassle without the need to trying to flog 3 old wheels.
