What are the odds of refreshes from either AMD or NVidia coming out before crysis?

I am seriously considering downgrading - maybe even as severe a downgrade as to a 8600gt.

The only games I am currently playing are f.e.a.r combat, Tomb raider Anni, Ghost Recon (plus 2 when out soon), maybe a little bit of Oblivion (but a bit bored with that)

I cant see anything coming out soon which I am likely to want to play besides GRAW2 and maybe Timeshift.

Am using a 22" monitor, but can happily drop from native res for awhile.

Also, if there are NVidia price cuts coming soon, won't lose much on the GTX.

colin mcrae dirt? lost planet? call of juarez dx10? there are games just about to pop up.

its probably not worth downgrading unless you can get close to retail value on your gfx card.

When my 8800GTS broke I got a cheap x1950pro 256mb as a temporary replacement. Things are not quite as fast (obviously) but everything runs with acceptable performance. This is on a 22" Samsung widescreen.

I paid £310 for my Leadtek card. I am confident I can get very nearly that.

Colin Mcrae might be fun, but I tend to get bored quickly with racing games.

As for DX10 implementations of COJ and Lost Planet, from existing benches/demo performance, I may just skip em.

Actually, considering poor performance of current DX10 implementations as mentined above, it might be better going back to a dx9 card until DX10 is running a little better, or the newer cards are out...

Must admit, I'm a little bit disapointed with game releases this year. Seems the hardware is there while the software isn't.

What is likely to have a better re-sale value later in the year between a 512mb 8600gt and a 256mb x1950 pro? The former being just over £90 currently, and the latter being about £10 less than that.

I think the odds are quite high, latest hint of a release date is October/November

Could even be as early as September if you believe Fud, Nvidia's next generation has already taped out. http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1420&Itemid=1 , theres just no stopping them, not sure if those will be high-end though, as the high-end G92 is supposedly October/November, and we may be lucky then and have at least 1x Dx10 game out. :D

ATi's next cards are not due till next Jan/Feb, so they are well and truly out of it at the moment as they are only competing with the GTS till then, Nvidia already have the much faster GTX and the much faster Ultra out, and their G92's are coming which are rumoured to be double GTX performance, about 1x teraflop, so you may as well forget ATi for the rest of this year as they just can't compete.

Ordered 8600gt for the other-half's pc, so am going to test it on the above games tomorrow on my pc prior to it going to its proper home.

Obviously I will be overclocking it, and along with that will be good to see how it is doing with the most up-to-date drivers.

What easy benches are there to run? Obviously 3DMark06, F.E.A.R, Call of Juarez DX10, Lost planet DX10.

At this point, GRAW and Oblivion will need to be me loading game and noting fps.

did u get the 512mb 8600gt? if so do post some results.

No, unfortunately not. I did order it, however it got stuffed up, so I have had to stick with tried, tested and trusted OCUK (who I do wish had the 512's in).

After doing some MAJOR searching online I did manage to find one place which did a comparison between the 256 and 512 and there was a marked improvement - If I remember correctly for one test they pushed 3dmark06 up to about 1920 x something with high levels of aa, and it there was something like a 80% improvement... now obviously that was extreme and anything would be unplayable at those settings on these cards, however at lower res's there was still an improvement.

I think the 512mb will actually help these cards, especially the gts, even if not much. If I am impressed enough with the 256mb I test tomorrow I might get a 512 when (if) they come in to OCUK.
