What area do you think the next big breakthrough will be in?

A new smartphone with 8GB of ram. Lifechanging stuff.

..a related breakthrough for this would be a batt that lasted a week on these devices. Its the one reason I havent bought one yet. I do know they are testing fuelcells lets see how that goes. Toshibas already testing them and got successes.

Impossible to say but I think maybe some sort of new fuel/power - basically a breakthrough that reduces our reliance on oil.

I also think that gradual change/enhancements will likely have just as significant an impact, for example 'standard' progression of telecommunications to a level where more and more devices are all interconnected, we walk around with a tiny device that we can 'plug in' anywhere we go, holographic projection etc.

phone with 6" screen?

LOL, have you held the Galaxy Note? 5.3 inches and it feels like a tablet and I don't have small hands either. The iphone is the best selling phone and only has a 3.5 inch screen so I don't see how making screens bigger is a breakthrough?

This would be nice. With mobile devices using more powerful hardware, a big development in batteries would really allow a lot of cool stuff to happen. Like my phone lasting more than 2 days without being charged.... even if I USED it a bit!

It will almost certainly be in Energy......as that is the predominant area of concern globally, both for political and environmental reasons....

the major energy research projects are decades away from being useful yet though, there will be more important things in the mean time.

Graphene is supposed to be one of he next big things. Been developed in UK as well iirc so if we can keep it in house with regards to production and don't lose another industry could be an economy booster for manufacturing and related industries that will spring up around it.

Microwaves that will just cook stuff, without having to be told "2 minutes" first.

Oh and implantable memory chips, I hate having to remember trivial stuff.

Shorter term breakthrough, I think it will be some form of Augmented reality, maybe not google glasses, but something like that. Longer term Fusion.
