What book are you reading...

Just finished 'Autumn' by David Moody. Very much enjoyed it. The last couple of chapters were nail biting stuff!

Next up is 'Mastering VMware VSphere 5' by Scott Lowe. Probably less thrilling than 'Autumn' but necessary for my exam.

Which was that?

Its been about 5 years since I read it and I can vaguely remember something irritating the life out of me when I was finishing it :p (despite enjoying it)

Probably the only story arc I didn't enjoy was the other habitat that got sucked into the other universe, that bored me, the rest was great.

The bit where Erik Thrakar uses faster than light communications to send a distress signal to his destination because his ship is unable to make the jump itself, which results in him getting picked up by Syrinx and Oenone, it's completely at odds with the entire universe built by Hamilton and bearing in mind the fact that a significant amount of plot is tied up in the fact that faster than light communications is impossible it's a major oversight.

Unless of course I missed something :)

I must have been thinking of something else, I just sort of explained that away in my own head as military grade tech they didn't share with anyone else, probably wrong to think that though :p

Just finished Martin's "A Feast for Crows" and am anxiously waiting for the paperback editions of the next volume to come out in March. I can see why many readers think he's gone off the boil a bit, but for me this series is fantasy for people who don't like fantasy. It has more to do with The Sopranos & The Wire than Lord of the Rings, so I've enjoyed every step of the journey so far.

Yes, there are some (rather weak IMO) fantasy elements, but they're fairly rare and inconsequential compared to the overall machinations of the characters involved. Their "arcs" are superb for those who enjoy a slow burning fuse.

Martin has gone straight to the top of my favourite author list now. I just hope he lives long enough to finish the series. :-)

Hats off to you!

I loved the first 3 volumes (4 books) until 'A Feast for Crows'. I got half way through then just couldn't bring myself to continue. I had to call it a day and move on to other things to read.

I hope you enjoy the rest of them. My understanding is he's got another two to go to finish the series. He needs to pull his finger out! :)

The thing I enjoyed most about Feast was the very fact it was a fairly "slow" book. I didn't devour it like the others, and could just enjoy being back in that world one chapter at a time. So I welcomed the slower sections with characters which seemed a little lost (in the overall scheme of things). I also welcomed the extra sleep I didn't lose to the temptation to read "just one more chapter". :-)

I'm dying to drop hints, but you really ought to get back to it some time. Towards the end a lot of those things start to come together and there are a couple of twists which really got me itching for the next volume.

The Unbearble Lightness of Being by Kundera, great title for a great book. Film on it was very poor and missed the boat completely.

reading the new robin hobb rain wilds trilogy and just finished her soldier son trilogy....amazing books totally recommend anything she has done

I thought the Soldier Son trilogy was pretty poor compared to her other stuff.

I much prefered the Assasin trilogy and the Tawny Man trilogy. The characters in Assasins trilogy just felt more real and engaging.

Im currently reading Ilium by Dan Simmons. Its excellent although a littlr taxing just jeeping up with the sheer number of characters sometimes. I have read reports that the sequel, Olympus, is even harder to follow and not quite as well written though.

I think I may have had this debate before with someone but I thought the series I read by her (the one where the bloke can talk to animals) was just garbage. :p

On the last book of the First Law trilogy by Abercrombie, good enough but the random character personality shifts for no reason in the second book were just... well random (unless something will happen to give them reason in the third book.)

Almost finished reading Bonfire of the vanities by Tom Woolfe. Excellent story, very entertaining story. I can see really visualise Tom Hanks as McCoy.

Also read Rogue Trader by Nick Leeson - his version about the lead up to thE colllapse of Barings? Incredible story?

Just finished reading Before I Go To Sleep by S J Watson.

Only read it based on recommendation. Not the type of book I'd usually pick.
It's a bit girly for my tastes, but actually quite interesting once you get into it.
Clever twist at the end, although I saw it coming a mile off.

Next up...Game of Thrones Book 1.
I normally struggle with medieval/fantasy writing. The fancy names put me off.
I spend so long trying to work out how to pronounce them that I lose track of the story!
