So, i've been with BT for many years now and im at my whits end about the poor speed we get in this house. I have rang on many occassions and each time my calls end in failure with all sorts of people in the BT heirachy telling me there is nowt wrong with my line.

So what speed am i getting?

Pretty poor im sure you'll all agree! Now the weird thing is my neighbours tell me they can get 3-4mbps connections which completely baffles me. Until recently i had assumed that i was just too far from the exchange and had to deal with this speed, that is until i got talking about this subject with my neighbours. Now unfortunately they are far from being tech savvy so i cant confirm their speeds myself.

Shockingly when i brought this up with one of the tech supervisors they said to me, even if my neighbours were getting those reported speeds they would not be able to provide the same to me even if i was to prove that was the speeds they are getting. Now that's ridiculous beyond belief, they are a matter of yards away from me ffs!

So, seeing as the speed BT are providing me doesn't dip below their minimum threshold speed is there anything i can do? Im getting pretty narked with not even being able to watch the likes of iPlayer without leaving it to buffer for ages :(

Firstly what is your line actually syncing at?

Post the stats from your router and that will give you some idea of whether it is a line issue or just poor throughput.

I wouldn't put it past just being BT and getting it sorted out will probably be a pain and most likely the easiest thing to do (if it is just throughput and the line is syncing significantly higher) is just change ISP.

I had this problem and no one could give me any answers, in the end out of sheer frustration I paid BT 80 quid to rewire the telecoms in the house and lo and behold two years later and everything runs sweet as a nut now. Just need Virgin media to implement fibre and I can kiss the PSTN goodbye for broadband.

Modem
ADSL Firmware Version 1.00.09.00
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 864 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38

That is what it's saying on my router (Netgear DG834G V2).

I guess this could be a potential problem. When i use the house phone there is definate static interference in the background, is this symtomatic of dodgey wiring? BT Support, uptill now have been entirely unhelpful really.

Is the hosue phone upstairs wired or wireless? If it's wireless then that could be general interference from another electronic device. If it's wired then possibly a bad line

Tried with the modem plugged into the master socket with your extensions, if any, disconnected?
Considering you're connected at 864kbps and how awful speedtest.net is, ~740kbps is pretty good...

Two phones in the house (both microfiltered). The one in the kitchen is a wireless jobby, it's got quite a lot of static. The one upstairs is a wired one which still has static but not quite so much.

Tolien would probably be able to confirm it better than me but sounds like it might be a bad line itself. How far are you from your local exchange? Whats the noise margin on the line?

if you can't get the phone line sored out, it will be a nightmare on top of the speed.
maybe you need find someone give another way of internet.
sky or virgin? I think they have a optical fibre approch

If you get static with a wired phone at the master socket, report it as a voice fault and don't mention your ADSL service at all. The key is that you need to eliminate your side of the wiring, i.e. your extensions.

Right thanks for the useful help so far lads. However im not exactly network savvy so how can i provide information like what Rab has suggested?

Also Virgin can only provide through BT's lines, i live in a fairly rural area and am a fair distance from the exchange.

On the router status page at the bottom, there is a show statistics button - all the details can be recorded from there :)
