What can I do ?

I signed up with an ISP in November 2005 as I was told that due to my distance from the exchange I could get 12.5 mbits adsl2 & was advised to get their adsl2 router (dg834gt) @ £80,which I did.

For the first day of service in January 2006 I was getting 4mbits, then it dropped to 3.3 for the next 5 weeks.

For the past 3 weeks its been erratic -mostly giving me 1mbits.
I asked my ISP to help, as my speed was lower & it was taking 5 minutes to load google.com. They advised to cap my connection at a lower speed, and then another lower speed; with each time yielding a lower connection speed & web page download problems, as they said that due to my distance from the exchange I was having problems (4.2km).

It seems that whenever I moan by at my ISP, my connection improves for a few days (4mbits 55db line att., 10db noise margin) then drops to a lower speed soon after which results in page download problemsl, eg:
Connection Speed 1120 kbps 576 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.0 db 9.0 db

Surely my phone line cant just depreciate all by itself ?, I get the impression my ISP is messing me about and I have wrote & spoke to them with no joy & just received email replies with very poor grammer.
I have tried every option at my end including router firmware, new microfilter, different pc/modem & there is only 1 phone socket with just the router in it.

I just want to be able to load web pages and download / play games & found 3.3mbits to be ok for this purpose.

I am signed into a 12month contract with this ISP who will not provide an internet service & wonder if another ISP could give me a working internet connection.

What can I do ?, as if I cancel my contract my ISP will surely charge me a line rental penalty fee.

UK-Online, did not know if it was ok to slander ISP here...

I'm 1.7km straight line (my checking) / 4.2km line length (according to ISP).
I emailed them - that I was getting 3.3mbits (55db line att., 10db noise margin) for 5 weeks, so why has it dropped now, then my connection increased to 4mbits/768kbps upload for a short while and now its back to 1mbits with eg. google loading in 1 min.

no errors, just very slow connection:
at the moment I have to keep rebooting the router every 20 minutes (bringing noise margin up to 7db) as when the noise margin drops to 6db I cant load web pages, yet last week it ran at 4mbits 55db line att. 10db noise margin for 4 days solid.
I've just had to reboot the router to post this & its:
Connection Speed 1280 kbps 576 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.9 db 9.0 db

Historically, capping the connection just made is worse & thats all my ISP will do, which is why I don't know what to do.

2 years ago I used to have a 576kbps adsl connection & then ran great, I wonder if capping my connection to 576 will give me a stable connection ?, though its a bit sad and annoying.

87.81.198.178 is my fixed IP, i've ran netstat & there's nothing dodgy, i've tested for my best MTU which is 1492.
Whats interleaving ?
