What can Newcastle United do in the coming season?

Following Owen's injury I'm a bit concerned that we only have Ameobi up front. It also seems to me that we now have an excuse for a dire season like the last one.

The cynic in me thinks we will put in a £30m bid for Torres in a very public way , obviously we wont get him but then the chairman will say "I tried".

On the other hand a new striker has been needed for a while , regardless of the Owen situation and I think we will get one.
It wont be a world superstar and instead of supporting Owen he will have to be the main man.
Ameobi just cant do it consistantly and to pin any hopes on Luque or Milner to take the gauntlet is naive in the extreme.

Shepherd is enduring his toughest time yet as chairman.
Season ticket sales are down and the club has shot its bolt in terms of spending during the Souness era.
An American hedge fund are trying to buy out Halls side of the club which will heap more pressure on Shepherd.
Once again our esteemed leader has been on TV shooting from the hip about insurance money for Owen and further discrediting his own reputation.

Almost every post I make on NUFC now seems to end with knocking the chairman but the buck really does stop with him.

What we do or do not achieve this coming season will depend on Shepherds actions and available funds (Roeders iffy reputation for quality purchases aside).
How he raises this money is up to him although we are deluded if we think it will come from Shepherds pocket.
He may well just leave the squad as is and gamble on the fact that below the top 4 or 5 sides , the league is much of a muchness and the difference between finishing 6th or 15th is just down to a little luck.

Ive no idea on how we will do until i see some movment in the transfer window and see who we buy but im guessing roeder wont be able to splash the cash like souey did, so he might have to work a bit harder to get some decent players in. i wouldnt mind seeing Kuyt up front tho and maybe Steed Malbranque in the team.

if i were newcastle id get jimmy floyd in from boro, hes a free agent now. would do the job till owen was fit. plus you need another striker, id say proven premiership player.

Gutted for you to be honest as it don't look good now Owen is out for so long.
Am also gutted Shearer has retired i really like that dude and will miss his one finger arm raised salute after scoring.
If i supported Newcastle i would be happy if they just stayed up next season and had a chance to build some finance. As long as they are mid table i would be happy and if you are lucky they may have a good cup run.
Saying that you may see some young'un come into the squad and set the ground alight. Heres hoping a. :)

newcastle fans certainly wouldnt stand for that. :p

They won't finish top 5 and they wont get relegated, so (like Vandle said) pick any number between 6 and 15, there's very little between them.

id be more worried about the state of the defence. they have a good attacking midfield, so a decent striker would sort them out. dont have to break bank.

Luque might pull his finger out this year. he hasnt been sold has he?

sorting out the defence must surely have a higher priority.

Luque, Ameobi and Milner is the current foward-line for next year, and to be honest neither Luque nor Milner are out-and-out strikers. It will be interesting to see if Luque can recapture some form if he stays injury free and is given a decent run in the team, I think he has genuine quality from what I saw of him at Deportivo. Basically I think he is good enough to get another chance given that Newcastle really don't have a lot of options to work with. I guess one thing they might look at is buying a top striker this summer, and hang on to Luque until next year when Owen is back.

Boumsong and Bramble are not good enough for a club with European ambitions and they need to add a bit of depth in defence. But I've thought that for years anyway.

They have one of the best goalies in the Prem, which will earn them enough points to stay up. The midfield is also decent; Parker, Emre, Dyer, Solano, Nzogbia are all up to the task. I wonder if Dyer might played further up the park given the striker crisis; he seems to fancy himself to do a job there.

I think they should look to sign a young talent like David Nugent from the championship. :)

that is being optimistic i think.

Just above relegation and getting knocked out first round at burney is more likely.

Just because Owen is injured? I can't remember Owen playing a huge part in last season's campaign, the fact of the matter is the Premiership is weaker than ever if you look past the top 4 or 5, if Newcastle sign two strikers and maybe a centre back we will easily be able to compete for Europe again.

Like Hangtime said, we have some of the best midfielders in the Premiership (why Carrick is ahead of Parker in the England squad is beyond me). I agree with Vandle about bidding for Torres as well, reminds me of the Rooney swoop two seasons ago.

really no need for worry now...

Jimmy Floyd is being targeted... even though he is 34... he wants a 2year deal..

imo.. great return for us.. free... and am sure he will get a few goals in these 2years.

great player.. and still pretty good.

He's got/had glandular fever so was unavailable for selection
