Looking for a new car around the 8-10k bracket to replace an FN2 Civic Type R. Here are the requirements :

- reasonably good performance
- comfortable for longer journeys
- over 25mpg
- reasonable running costs
- under 6 years old
- must seat 4, and have some sort of way of carrying a dog (open to estates, hatchbacks etc)

Open to suggestions - all I can think of at the moment is a mk5 R32 at the top end of the budget - anyone think of anything suitable?

Would love an ST220, but wouldn't consider spending 8k on one for some reason - maybe 5k on a slightly older model.

What would the regular ST220 hatch be like - ok size wise for a dog?

I'd agree on the 130i front - great car and a bargain at the moment - but the boot just isn't big enough.

The hatch is a wierd shape, the estate is better for a bigger dog like a Lab. But agreed, 8k is a lot for one.

We had a full sized Labrador in a Mk2 Mondeo hatch no problems. Sure this was like 12 years ago but... the Mondeo hatch is perfectly suitable.

How about a BMW 3 series Touring ??

Don't know why no one on here ever seems to recommend them

(But it have to be someone else like fox to tell you what there like and what the running costs would be like )

Had a look at some of the E90 tourings, would really want a 330i but they don't seem to have come into the 10k price bracket for a decent one as yet!

Sorely tempted to recommend an S4 Avant, but it doesn't quite fit into your budget (age-wise, anyway).

There is no law tying you to the same insurer for life you know.

Yes, but couldn't be bothered loosing 9 months of NCB for the sake of choosing a vRS!

Yep Greenlight insurance - great company but some bizarre exclusions from their cover!
