What car shall I get to replace a Honda Civic 3dr 1.4i 1996?

Looks like i'm going to sell my current car (first car). Been offered a very good price for it and I see no reason not to sell. This time around I want a car that has good fuel consumption (commute to B'ham from Coventry every day). Not a big peugeot fan but anything else considered...

Max Price: £2000 (not including insurance)

Insurance needs to be as cheap as possible!

Background info: Male, 21, less than a years driving experience :( , 0 no claims :(

So far, I've looked at a Seat Ibiza 1.2, and thats about it really!

Any ideas?
 
I've always though of the mondeo as an old mans car.*waits to get thraped*

A ford would be a good option though as dad gets discount on parts :)

Actually yes, why not.

Consider a nice Mondeo 2.0 16v - it'll get over 40mpg on the Motorway, although 25mpg around town. Plenty of nice standard equipment, decent performance, tidy handling, and reliable.

Infact, better in every way bar marginally higher running costs than something like a 1.2 Ibiza. I'd sooner keep your Civic than buy an underpowered shoebox.

One thing I don't understand is why the Mondeo is considered an old mans car. It's certainly not favoured by the older generation in the way, say, most Hondas are - it's a car that could be driven by anyone - from a sales rep to a young guy to a family guy, whatever. It's a car that suits so many different purposes and is thus driven by many different people. Glance at the next 10 you see, I bet you'll see a wide range of drivers..

Would my insurance go up do you think... might check in a sec but on the Civic am paying £850 mods declared (exhaust, lowered, clusters, alloys)

Which isn't going to be a hard task, it'll take all of about 12 seconds whilst out on the roads :)

That's a good thing - lots of people bought them because they're good cars, and there'll be plenty of cheap spares for it :)

Doubt it would go up much, I was 19 and paying £1200 mods declared with my modded Mondeo (exhuast, bodykit)... and you are 2 years older than I was.

Yes i do... they came with the car (I don't really like them but can't be bothered to change them!)

Looks like the mondeo brigade may have converted me - just been talking to dad, he says its a good idea too.

I can't really help in the thread (as I'm sure you don't want to buy a Rover), but the Civic you mention... it's not silver with some nice rims is it?

Reading the description (alloys, exhaust) it reminds me of one that was posted on here a while back.

Did/does it have tints?

Nice looking car. Shame you're selling, but if you got a good price for it, then I don't think you're going to be complaining much :D
 
Good choice, Mondeos aren't the best car ever, but for that money, you'll get a tidy 2.0 Ghia X with lots and lots of kit, and it's unlikely to let you down as long as it's been properly maintained :)
 
keep the Civic and save money until you are a bit older, have some NCB and can buy a car you really want :)
 
i drive a mondeo too, 2.0 Ghia at 20 and yes everyone takes the ****.

But it really is very comfortable, and mine is a W Reg and only cost £850, cheaper and newer than all there cars. Much nicer to drive than Passatts and 407's i drive at work although the passat is much better built.

Do you really find that, though? I've found the only time anyone ever takes the **** out of my car is either on forums, or when they havn't seen it.

Nobody who has seen it takes the mick.
 
The main reason for getting rid of the civic is because its not very nice to drive on the motorway... as I said in the first post I drive to Brum from Cov every day nearly and I get left with a headache after every journey lol. I do like the civic and I will miss it but I think its time to step away from my boy racer image :p
