Hi folks...

My job will require a LOT of driving so im gonna sell my current car as its too expensive to run for the sort of job it will be used for, the tax, insurance, and fuel consumption isnt ideal for the job.

Anyway...

Ideally im looking to get something that looks alright, is reliable, low miles (under 40k ideally) and is cheap...

Any ideas?

The budget isnt high enough with that milage requirement. You wont get a car with less than 40k miles for £3000.

Course you will, just not the type of car he wants :p

Personally, I would be looking at HDi 406's, and VAG TDi's (Toledo's, Octavia's, Passat's).

That is assuming you're doing a lot of miles (20k plus) to warrant a diesel, if not then I'd expand the list to include petrol 406's, and Mondeo's.

When you say LOTS of driving, what do you mean exactly?

Most jobs which require mega miles will provide a car to do it in, either that or a car allowance to pay for a better car than £4000 will buy.

He wont get a car with less than 40k on it for £3000, he might manage a shopping trolley..but i cant think of any cars which would be in this bracket.

I agree with the choices above, but you really are going to have to drop the 40k mileage limitation.

I agree on most fronts there, but you can pick up stuff like Rover's and Xsara's with those kinds of mileage, anything that's been owned by and old person normally :p

If the mileage were genuine, and it isn't a dog, then something like this would be ideal. Probably been a mum taxi for the last 7 years.

Edit: I forgot to mention that you shouldn't be put off stuff with higher mileage. So long as it's been looked after, and serviced when it should be, cars with high(er) mileage are generally fine.

There will of course be the odd exception :) most cheap low milage stuff is cheap for a reason though - most rovers, and citroen xsara's are garbage.

If he is doing mega miles then he wants a mondeo class car or bigger really. The very minimum i'd consider would be a well built focus class car. Cars smaller than this suffer from really poor motorway performance (in all area's, not simply power), and will have an annoyingly short range per tank.

I don't disagree at all, I was just being a pedant :p

Maybe 500 miles a week?

I'd definitely get something bigger and comfier than an Astra (as well as better).

How about this.

2000 W Reg SEAT Toledo 1.9 TDi S
4 Doors, Manual, Saloon, Diesel, 55,000 miles

media

£3,950

For 4 grand, and a TDi toledo you will be able to get one with SE spec (You could when I was looking), which is; Alloys, Climate, Cruise, Trip Computer, CD Changer etc.

Just depends on how fussy you are with the mileage.

Sorry but what?

You can get cars with less than 40k on, saying he won't is just wrong, you're saying flat out no it can't be done, what you really mean is he is unlikely to get a car with 40k or less on for 3k...

But as he said, he is fussy with mileage. 55k was the lowest I could see in the price bracket.

If you're doing a lot of miles, it makes no sense at all to buy something with low miles on it and run the value of it right down. Go for a fairly young motorway run Focus or Mondeo with 100k+ miles on it

Why don't you get a car with a high mileage instead, you will lose so much money on it if your clocking up high mileage on it from low

Yea I like SEAT's, thats what I have now, an Ibiza Cupra on a 2001 '51' plate.

57k miles and I will rapidly lose money on it if I put loads of mileage on it.
