I've got an old system that my son is using and it's working fine but there's zalman cooler which is making a lovely clicking constantly so I'm guessing it's probably a good time to get a new cooler but I'm not really sure what I need to get. The ones shown in the manual seems to be a different fixing than what's on there at the moment. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

The Motherboard is an MSI M7851 V2.2 Details: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/H81I/Specification

Oh yeah, good point, it's been a long day and that didn't even cross my mind.

It's an Intel 4790 CPU and I've just got hold of a cheap Mini tower case as it was in a case that was a tad too small for a bigger graphics card: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/aerocool-cs-105-cosmo-mini-tower-black-ca-21t-ae.html

I was looking at that type of cooler but the fixing looks different:

This is one of the fixings that's there at the moment:

Looks like a standard intel socket 1150 (aka lga1150) to me... so it 'should' work with (assuming it fits case and can cope with heat, you don't say cpu or case) any 1150 compatible cooler such as

Having had a bit of a look it seems the zalman cooler attaches with back plate and brackets etc which explains why it looks different. Would the linked Alpine cooler be ok for the I7 4790 CPU?

Honestly, I'm not too sure but the ocuk page says it's good for 95 watts and the 4790 is 84w....so it 'should' work.

It doesn't look a lot different to the stock 4790k fan I have and while that combo didn't throttle it did get a little toasty for my taste, but the 4790k does have a higher tdp etc than the 4790.
I'm currently using a SilentiumPC Fera 5 on my 4790k and that seems to work pretty well for how much I paid for it.

Cheers, I think I'll give this one a go and see how it goes, it'll get things up and running for now and if needs be I'll upgrade it
