Yeah, it's such a big open world I was lost for ages, and spent a lot of time running away from things. For me it added to the early game tension, knowing you had to be careful where you stepped, scout out areas, keep your eyes open.
Once you get a feel for the layout of the world it all falls into place. I like that there's no hand-holding in this. Someone tells you where to go, and you have to find it. Like Morrowind.
Once you get magic things get easier. Although it's quite some time into the game before you get powerful, if you conserve early learning points to save for magic investment later, you'll be all pew-pew on those orcs!
It's perfectly possible to play as a fighter too, if you prefer to bash things. Though I think most people find rangers a bit tricky to play.
Risen is really just a watered-down and graphically-updated version. It runs a lot better and without the bugs that plagued the original release of Gothic 3, but I like my RPGs with scope and atmosphere!
