Looking to spend about £150...What's the best out of this little lot?

Pentax Optio 50L - £129.99
Olympus FE110 - £99.99
Sony S600 - £159.99
Canon Powershot A520 + Canon Selphy CP510 Dye Sub Printer - £164.99
Nikon Coolpix L3 - £169.99

I know absolutely nowt about digicams (my current one is a Yamada Astrapix 550...Offer of the day a couple of years ago on a competitors' site... ;) ) so any advice would be great.

Cheers,

I'm a complete camera newb too, I bought my first ever digi camera for £120 a month ago. I got the Samsung A50 and I love it. Plenty of scope for fiddling with the settings or just sticking it on auto. And it take cracking movies too, at 30frames a second so it isnt jerky, and the movies are limited only by the memory card, not to 30 secs or so like some cameras.
But if you only need it for pics, its good too, only thing is that I recommend you buy a really solid set of high capacity batteries, if you dont they will be dry in 20 minutes.

I bought some 2700mAh batteries and they last about 4 times longer than normal duracells.

Me too upon first look, but the Canon (released Sep 2005) is obsolete. I think they're selling it to get rid of excess stock now it's been replaced by something else.

I wouldn't have the Olympus because it's the only one which doesn't take AA batteries and I wouldn't want a compact digi that didn't take normal batteries.

Sony (released Feb 2006) review looks good, Nikon (released Feb 2006) review wasn't so good and they weren't impressed with image quality or flash.

Can't find a review for the Pentax, but sod it, I'd still take the Canon actually, especially with a printer thrown in. This camera got a fantastic review when it came out, it's not that old, and Leon has the A620 (a couple of models up) and has had an A80 in the past. Both fabulous cameras. This, coupled with the fact that I have 3 awesome Canon SLR's still gives me enormous faith in the Canon brand.

Call me a Canon fanboygirl, but I have looked at the reviews of as many of the others as I could find, and it still came out Canon. I was tempted by the Sony for a while though.

What's the most important feature that you want?

Zoom?
Small size?
Macro function?
Manual controls?

The ability to take photos that don't look like those victorian sepia photos that have been 'coloured' (think Cheers titles...)

Macro would be cool...

I've not been into my photography since I was in my early teens...so really need to get stuck back into it.

I added you to MSN, but you weren't around, so I put my views in brief in the post above :) If you need any more help, give me a shout.

You should be able to get a Canon a610 for around £150-160 I just got an a620 for £190
That's probably what I'd do too

, but I wanted to try and stay within the choices that Penski had given. A610/20 are fantastic little cameras with lots of room for improvement shoud you want to start dabbling with manual controls and suchlike. Fantastic macro function too.

[COUGH COUGH COUGH] have the A620 at £189.99 inc. VAT...

Me likey :)

Looking at bundles elsewhere, [COUGH COUGH COUGH] has it at £210 basic and £265 with:

1gb SD Card, Canvas Case, 4 x AA 2000mah Nimh Rechargable Batteries and Charger + FREE MINI TRIPOD (ZOMGS"""!""!! FRE!"!!!)

;)

With regards to memory - how many pics can you expect a 7mp camera to fit on a 1Gb card?

Lots :p

Personally i'd get an Ixus. But they're expensive :( Though they are much more pocket sized, and this is usually really helpful, as you end up taking it out a lot more often.

I'd probably get the Ixus 55 :)

I have MASSIVE hands (10" thumb tip to pinkie tip stretched, palms are 4.5"x5.5"...I can't believe I just measured that) and find small cameras impossible to use.

I think the A620's the one for me :)

I would too, the A620 is a lovely camera, I am a Canon fan too, have read reviews on every camera i could for under £250 when i got my Canon S70 just after Christmas and still went for the S70. I have found the Sonys usually felt really light, average built quality with average screens, don't like the Nikon's user interface, and i don't trust small brands when it comes to cameras. And i have no regrets getting the S70, does absolutely everything i want for £230.

How does the A620 compare with the IXUS range?

I cant decide on which of the 2 to get?

They're aimed at different people really. The A series have a lot more manual features than the Ixus range, but the are also larger.

I personally have an Ixus and DSLR, which is ideal for my needs. I'm of the opinion that a compact camera should be compact enough to be carried in your pocket all of the time, like your phone.
