Currently using 1 Behringer Truth active monitor, 1 died after about 3 months and now this one is starting to hum/crackle etc.

Got about £250 to spend, what should I be looking for?

A few people have recommended the Alesis Monitor 1 MK2's, anyone had experience with them?

Cheers

I use the Monitor 1 mk2's at work and they're not too bad - but below about 100hz their response is somewhat unpredictable.

Those KRK's look tasty though, especially with only a 4db range over that kind of frequency response. Ideally you'd want a sub to go with them though, but to get you up and running they look spot on. :)

Bedroom or bar/club DJing?

I've never seen a DJ yet with sub's in pair with monitors like.

I have a pair of EV studio monitors for my kit and i must say they're pretty impressive for the size.

You don't *need* a sub for monitoring, but once you've had one, it spoils you. ;) Also when you start producing (as many DJ's end up doing) you'll be glad you can monitor lower frequencies properly when you've got a sub rather than guessing with nearfields. :)

you need to listen to at least 2 things,
one side in your headphones and one
side in your monitors.

Can't you listen to both in your headphones? I'm probably being stupid.
Well you can with some DJ mixers, and this can be ok for practising without annoying the neighbours, but it's much better to do it like it would be in the club - headphone going to one ear, the other ear listening to monitors.

I find it's much easier then for your brain to work out which tune is which due to the extra reverb (well room acoustics) that you get from the tune on the monitors.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, you'll have to the tune that's currently playing going thru the monitors, and you'll have the next tune you about to mix in on yer cans.

I do DJ in clubs but these will be for my loft setup.

I won't be producing, I only just have enough to squeeze a mix in here and there!

I think i've narrowed it down to the following:

Alesis Monitor 1 MkII's

Alesis M1 Active 620's

KRK RP 5's

I know the Alesis MkII's are solid, they've been around for years. Whats the difference between these and the Alesis M1 Active 620's? The latter seem to have a bigger spec but it's the same power. I know they do the 520's too, at nearly half the price, would they be adequete enough for a loft setup?

I've also included the KRK RP 5's as i've heard a lot of good things about them.

Am I likely to notice an increase in sound quality over the Truths?

Cheers for the help.

Bad idea using active speakers, better to use the amp and speaker combo version of the Alesis Monitor's Ive heard from multiple people
