What do gamers actually think about Ray-Tracing?

WTF does this even mean?

Its full of source based lighting and shading too, its a full Ray Traced scene.

When i read comment's like this my first thought is the commentor thinks Ray Tracing is when your FPS tank's 80%, anything that actually runs well is not real. Its very Nvidia marketing coded thinking. I'm not in the least bit surprised you can't see past the reflections.

look again at my post to see the limitations of that demo from cryengine

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...t-ray-tracing.18984266/page-163#post-38377209

Anyway, nothing is stopping devs to use whatever version they want for maximum performance (pun intended).

You used AI to summarise a Youtube video?

The points that the AI list are without context, that is the Neon Noir benchmark which a lot of "influencers" claim to be a "fake RT scene" actually uses the same techniques other Ray Traced examples that these same influencers cite, Or they use different techniques that are more optimised with the same result.

The AI does not know the difference between something critical of the scene and correcting inaccuracies by influencers, because its AI, its garbadge.

Yes he is also critical Neon Noir benchmark optimisation but also acknowledges and explains how its far better optimised than a lot of other examples.

It's amusing people in 2026 take threat interactive beyond a grain of salt, still.

I don't, the guy knows what he's talking about, much more so than i do and i know more about it than a lot of people do. I've learned things from him.

I've been using various engines for 10 years, including Cryengine, i can easily reproduce that scene in Cryengine.

I made the same overarching point he did years before he did, i'm surprised it taken him so long to get around to it.

Like I said.
I took from it that most didn't watch the video instead spent time dunking. Its not the author I was sharing its the points being made in the video is all I digested (I didn't need AI to watch it for me :p ). Less FPS lost to clumsy ordering. Bit hard to sell RT if the industry puts no effort into it!

At least I know one poster reads these days, maybe this skill has been lost in the reflections..

You won't find anyone across multiple communities paying attention to anything from threat interactive, for all the reasons already covered in this thread, and rightly so.

To add a bit to this, he's making strikes against videos that use part of his videos (normally under "fair use" and is ironic anyway since he's using other people's games to critique) and he's blocking anyone who doesn't share the same views as him.
He's an opaque guy that can't be engaged in a serious talk outside of the "yes man" fan base. So yeah, it gets ignored, sometimes by default :D

Is not fully ray traced, for sure not the level of PT.

https://www.cryengine.com/news/view...-ray-traced-reflections-in-cryengine-and-more

From 2015 CRYENGINE has used a form of ray tracing for our in-house GI solution, Total Illumination, used in shipped titles like Kingdom Come: Deliverance and our very own Hunt: Showdown. Until now, one of the limitations of CRYENGINE’s GI solution was the level of detail in real-time reflections. While most surfaces were supported well, very smooth and reflective surfaces like mirrors were problematic, forcing game creators to rely on pre-baked cube-maps and local screen space reflections.

Neon Noir demonstrates the next upgrade to our GI system which is real-time mesh ray-traced reflections and refractions. This technique shows high-quality scene meshes and textures perfectly reflected in mirrors and reflective surfaces using GPU ray tracing. Neon Noir is a research and development project, but ray-traced reflections will come to the engine by the end of the year. There are, of course, many applications for ray tracing like ambient occlusion or soft shadows, but we currently focus on using this feature for very reflective surfaces

It uses different tricks to get it done and is mostly done around reflections. There aren't RT shadow or GI, just their older SVOGI. Kingdome Come is good for this, but it does have its shortcomings typical to rasterization.
Moreover, I've downloaded the demo to test it locally and even on Ultra, in some instances, it lacks shadows completely for areas that, at least in the YT video, appear.

DF below shows some of the shortcomings of the demo (short LOD for actual RT triangles, mirror like, low resolution reflections like 1:4 at best and around 1/7 or 1/8 just one step down at v. high, etc). Basically, is the old "mirror like" reflections that are easier to do and less about rough reflections which are harder in terms of performance and denoise. Plus, not really much happening there that needs to be updated every scene.

It used the video + references from "real life". Do I trust it completely? No. But I also don't take TI's approach as an end goal from "wishful thinking land". :D

At least others do provide an actual alternative to the standard UE5, with their own work.

I get that but I have not even heard of this guy/channel. Point of topic: you cannot discuss them if you a) don't watch the video or b) just ask AI to watch the video for you.

Its not the author I was sharing its the points being made in the video... Less FPS lost to clumsy ordering.

Same scrutiny applies to any channel. At least spend the time to take onboard the elements. Just say you didn't watch the video up front, not bothered what you judge the creator personally or your opinion of them is. :D

I do think TI makes some good points that counter the narrative. Do I think everything he says is an exact science? No. Do I like him on a personal level? Doesn't matter.
What I find interesting is the hate he gets, to the point that he has nothing to say and everything is just misinformation. Shuts down any discussion of points he makes. It just seems over the top, like people take it personally.
Even more interesting is some people who tell others not to listen have themselves been guilty of spreading bad information, sometimes in these ocuk forums.

All the videos I've seen from him are basically the same: here's game or engine X and here's an analysis of a frame or two, plus "what to do". This one is no different (got around to see it).
As a side note, he's pushing a rtx 3060 like that card HAS to run RT or whatever at 60fps 1080p (probably native) and TAA or something like it is great with a few modifications, no need for DLSS! :))

Now putting this analyse forward after so much time is a bit funny. Yes, the demo runs good, but is a demo, only with RT for reflections, which looks different anyway from Crytek's trailer of it , which, for instance, has shadows from the bollards to the right, at the club's entrance, while the demo available to us now doesn't... and that's one of the scenes he's looking at. The shadows are missing from other places, too.

On top, I see @humbug 's 7800xt is almost bottlenecked by a 5800x in that run without much happening in the scene. Add some NPCs and other stuff and yeah... CPU limited even with a relative slow card. Probably due to DX11.

So while it runs pretty good overall, it does so with some * in small writing. :D

Plus, at the end, while talking/mentioning the lower quality meshes, he's suggesting using, amongst others, HW RT in UE 5 and Nanite... the same Nanite he talked a while back, as killing performance.

"proprietary tech" talk, is a jab at nvidia, but relevant how? SER, Mega Geomety, etc., got into dx... Ok, RR is different, but is AMD has it's own thing. Not the least, what complex demo / game is out there, pushing this version of SW RT beyond what it can be achieved with dedicated HW?

He gets hate for making strikes against videos that engage in his debats.
He gets hate for blocking people that don't agree with him and is not interested in actual face to face (well, at least on video), talks.
He gets hate for telling people to downvote games made on UE5 just for the sake of it, even though they liked the game or the developers.
And while he acts like a petty guy , at least those devs are getting rewards and recognition, while he, and his "team" didn't show anything meaningful beyond empty talk (at least I didn't hear / see anything).

TI has never shown anything of their own work, the work they big up as fixing everything wrong with current engines.

It's all talk generated to gain clicks and reshares by people who should know better and nothing more.

The main talking head himself on video looks like an AI generated character, the sheer irony is lost on people it seems.

Edit*

I did not realise that he's been using a 3060 class GPU to do all these demos lol as didn't pay attention to that side of things. That makes the irony even more ironic.

Not having a pop but I still listen to your input, years back you pushed CP support ended and wouldnt get any more updates specifically AMD FG support simply because you read too much into the Unreal engine announcement...

And suddenly feeling a 60 class gpu RT capable flip flop...
