I'm just on MSN to my mum, shes complaining about having to drive for a 1:45 journey each way tomorrow, as she really dislikes driving. I'm trying to convince her that it is possible to enjoy it, but she's having none of it. So, please tell me why you guys enjoy driving and cars so much.
Thanks!

Its hard to really explain. I like the sense of freedom, I like the sense of power, I like the fact that I'm (mostly) in control.

That may mean that I drive a little quickly, but thats definately not a pre-requisite of having fun behind the wheel, just enjoy the music, the views (whilst keeping an eye on the road for god's sake!), and take each corner as it comes!

It may be helpful to keep off motorways if possible as they are just boring!

I like the whole 'driving' aspect of it :) It really is that simple - I just love driving.

Me too. Freedom, control, power, speed, danger (ahem). I've never driven a car I couldn't have at least some fun in - that includes 1.1 Fiestas, 1.2 Polos, 800cc (?) Daewoo Matiz, etc.

i dont enjoy it anymore, ive had the speed aspect in a car, and whats the point.

You cant fully use the speed of a fast car (unless its on the track, its more a status thing), fuel costs bordering on £1 a litre, high road tax, expensive servicing, high depriciation on some cars etc.

Its crap.

I just like dicking about in anything with an engine, lawnmowers mini motos (the 125cc ones not the annoying 50cc) motorbikes cars rotorvaters :P anything. I like being pushed around without having to do the work myself.

THe big 'fun' pedal, coupled with the fun-ometer (boost guage) are some of the best parts of driving. As a complete tart, I like people looking at my car - it's great when a total stranger engages you in conversation about your motor on a petrol forecourt:D

I like accelerating, overtaking, twisty back roads, motorways, the shear freedom to go where I want, when I want.

Driving rocks - I don't care if it's 100.9 for optimax and I only get 20 to the gallon!!

I enjoy driving my car even without the speed.

I like the way I turn my steering wheel say 180 degrees and the car turns pretty much instantly and quickly with it. I like the way my car goes round corners level. I never really get tired of going round roundabouts or traveling down nsl roads in my car.

In my parents, works or hired front wheel drive cars? Yes, driving these I can see why people hate driving.

I live for B-roads! :)

Hammering a decent car hard around these roads is an absolute joy for me. Having the confidence & ability to do so gives me muchos enjoyment.
Naughty - I cant argue with that. Dangerous - I don't involve other road-users.

Also, regarding the opening post, if she's travelling during rush-hour & motorways, then Christ, no wonder she's not looking forward to it!
Any idea's on locations & times?

There are so many reasons why i love driving. i've always been interested incars, i remember the first top gear i watched, being in total control of something that can give u the freedom to go anywhere, blasting down a backroad with your best music playing puts a smile on my face.

I find going for a blast driving with no intention of going anywhere just takes the stress out of a long day at work, i generally finish work late at night a rough day can soon be cured by a quick blast up the local NSL roads. :D

I'm just learning to drive right now and I'm not sure if I enjoy it, it scares me and I don't always feel I'm in control. Gonna keep at it though as I like being in cars going along country roads and stuff. :)

driving sucks when your doing 60 miles a day on a crowded dual carriageway. (a406!) :(

It has its moments of enjoyment though... small pleasures like when someon comes up my arse for driving too "slow"...wait for it to become safe and then i boot it and leave em in my dust :)

Love getting on the twisty open roads its great fun.

I felt the same at 1st, it'll wear off, for the 1st few weeks after passing i used to feel nervous for a bit when the clock hit 8:30 & i knew it was time for the 9 mile drive home, it quickly passed & now i love driving.

I waste loads of fuel going the long way to places just for fun when i'm in my own car.

Not the same in my dads volvo though, its just a means of getting somewhere & is loads cheaper than a taxi.

Its pretty much impossible to explain to someone who just doesn't get it, its just something your born with. Petrol in your veins kinda thing. Not neccesarily from your parents (no-one else in my family is into cars), but maybe a gene or something. Some people love golf, some cycling, some throwing themselves out of a perfectly working aircraft. For me, driving gives me that adrenalin rush. I suppose its the thrill of being in control, and i suppose there is a bit of danger involved. All adds to the thrill.
