Is it the DDR3? Is it quicker? 
What does an X38 do that a P35 mobo cant?

All the P35 boards have a second 16x physical slot that runs at 4x. X38 has it at 16.
DDR3 and DDR2 X38 Boards some can use both.
X38 is newer and cost more

X38 has PCI-e 2.0, which up to this point is pretty much inconsequential.

Ah, OK, cheers. The 3870x2 uses the PCI-e 2 quite heavily doesnt it? I'm not interested in one of those though so thats that.

No card(s) even in SLI or Crossfire saturates PCI-E 1.0/1.1 so far.
PCI-E 2.0 slots can give a lot more power than before.

I think from toms review it is pci-e 1.1 but he might have been on about the crossfire chip on the card itself.
On toms review it's a pci-e 2.0.

You are correct. The interface between the card and the motherboard is PCI-e 2.0. The interface between the cores is PCI-e 1.1.
