What film did you watch last night?

Calvary

Brendan Gleeson is excellent in this drama about a priest in a small Irish town who is given 1 week to arrange his affairs by a stranger in the confessional booth, after which he will be killed. Great film.

Worlds Greatest Dad

5/10

It wasn't a hugely entertaining film in my opinion, but it worked well, the grief was very believable, the acting was good in most places, the ending was weak and a little disappointing.

That's on our love film list. It looks good.

Good morning Vietnam 6/10
Hunger games catching fire 7/10, not sure why everyone hates hunger games so much, it is what it is.
Thor the dark world 7/10

I enjoyed the Hunger games films and if I didn't mind looking like a paedo I'd go and see the next ones at the cinema.

Super 8. Loved it. Sterling effort by the young cast. Was expecting something soppy like ET (don't get me wrong, love that film too!), but this had a little more grit, an alien you wouldn't want to meet, and even the F word!

The Normal Heart (2014)

The story of the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s, taking an unflinching look at the nation's sexual politics as gay activists and their allies in the medical community fight to expose the truth about the burgeoning epidemic to a city and nation in denial.

Utterly brutal yet beautifully executed, one of the best and most powerful films I've seen in a long time.

9.3/10

Don't make family films like this anymore. Childhood favourite, always makes me laugh.

RIP Mr Williams.

Divergent - 3/10. Should have been called Diversion, as in take a diversion around this awful, dumb film.

I know it's based on a book or something but it was clearly trying to be Hunger Games the entire time, but failed miserably.

I agree that it is jumping on the Hunger Games bandwagon.
The Host is also the same.

Basically, after Twilight made a huge amount of money, there are other books about teengers, made into movies, being aimed at teenagers, trying to capture the same audience.
The Host didnt make much money, so the other 2 films probably wont be made.
The same may apply for divergent.

When you are making a trio of movies, from the get go, there is huge profit to be had, if the first movie succeeds, which is why I think we shall see plenty more of these types of movies.

The other hugely profitable genre is super hero movies. And I expect plenty more of these.

I tweeted something similar to my comment above last night which seemed to attract the attention of one of "those" types who searches Twitter and then replies to everyone who has mentioned a particular film, TV show etc. Anyway, he called it a "masterpiece". Hilarious.

It had some potential but it gave no backstory about Triss, gave no explanation as to why the world is what it is (not important but in this case, useful information) and why these factions have aligned the way they have, and also left me wondering whya girl who's not concerned with vanity (yet mysteriously manages to have perfect hair and eyeliner all the time) wants to join the renegades. Not once did I really understand what her motivation was; she's told she's divergent and yet it only seems to come into relevance at the end of the film when the other faction is trying to weed them out.

Instead it was more concerned with close-ups of when the attractive guy put his hands on her or whatever. Eugh.

Sunama, I heartily agree about the cash-ins after Twilight. I listen to a lot of audiobooks and one site I frequent is made up of 90% drival that is just cashing in one Twilight. Every possible combination of supernatural entity loves stereotypical teen girl. Sadly, the major effect on me is that I now ignore anything on the site by female authors as they're all the same.

Anayway, rant over, I watched "Blended". A typical Adam Sandler effort. Not great but it raised a good few laughs. My wife and I were amused by how transparently poorly plotted it was. At one stage when the Drew Barrymore is trying to bond with Sandler's kids, her own kids simply cease the exist until the next scene. Hysterical. :) 5.5/10 for chuckles only.

These films are also incredibly easy to spot (both Hunger Games-alikes and superhero films), so if you don't like them then you don't have to watch them.
