What film did you watch last night?

So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Bloody well loved this when I was a kid, thought it was hilarious. "heed, move, now!"

Not so good 23 years later. In fact it's just awkward and weird throughout. Didn't stop me laughing at the silly bits though.

An overrated 6/10 for nostalgia.

The Stanford Prison Experiment - it's odd, dark, twisted...and based on a true story. Very gripping albeit a little slow to get going, but well worth a watch, very different from the norm!

Legend - Superb acting from Tom Hardy throughout. Really enjoyed it.

The Big Short - 8/10 - cracking fast paced film/documentary about the economic crash caused by greedy bankers in 2007.

Flights to and from Singapore this week. I don't normally watch films on planes as the screens are so poor but the ones on SQ were very nice so-

The Big Short - 9/10 well acted, scripted and made a difficult subject accessible without being condescending.

Steve Jobs - 8.5/10 - again well acted and great approach. If anything would have worked better as a series.

Truth - 8/10 - Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford were very good. Ultimately, whilst an interesting story it is not the same weight of story as the Big Short or the like.

The Counsellor - 4/10. On paper this should be great, and some are (Fassbender really good, Pitt on familiar territory but still good) but others were bad (Bardem and Diaz) and the story just didn't really work.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016) - 2/10

Some interesting ideas and a strong moral point, but poorly delivered in a dull and predictable film with scenes which make little sense in the overall narrative.

The acting is mediocre with no character development, and the new characters are little more than cardboard cut outs.

The special effects vary from impressive to appalling, and plot-wise, it’s a mess with nothing ultimately resolved.

Finally got around to watchning Sin City 2... The original is probably in my top 10 list of best films ever... The sequel was poor in comparison... I really wish they had pursued new characters rather than trying to do a 'tie in' film.

The first one was a cross between the Hunger Games and Twilight, bad enough to put me off watching any more of them!

Monsters... Third time I've seen this and each time it seems to get better. Its title misrepresents it, as it really is not an action/monster flick, though it does have creatures in it. It subtle, nicely acted and beautifully shot, with some (mostly) amazing effects, all the more amazing considering it was a micro budget film, with the director (Gareth Edwards) being writer, DOP and CGI artist, all in one. Well worth picking up cheap on Blu Ray for its (done right) making-of extras, which are longer than the actual film  ... 8.5/10

The Witch - 7/10

Strange one this as its a film that I enjoyed, without actually enjoying it. If that makes any sense. Terrific acting by all the child actors. I did kind of feel that parts of the movie were "missing" though, would have liked things to be fleshed out a little more as I was left with a lot of questions, but perhaps that was the point.

On a sidenote..I went to see this in Portsmouths Gunwharf cinema.

NEVER...NEVER again.

What an absolute **** of a place Portsmouth is at times. Or at least the people in it. Right from the first minute of the film there were people just talking and laughing with each other , literally all the way through the film. People texting on their mobiles, 2 young guys (in their 20s) just giggling..yes, literally giggling, non stop. Like uncontrollable giggling, not saying anything , just nonstop giggling. Whether they were on some sort of drug I dont know, but I've never known people to just uncontrollably giggle nonstop. After about 20mins they got up and left, as did another 3 young guys after about half an hour, but not without first shouting out some gibberish in the cinema. The film is pretty atmospheric but the atmosphere was certainly tested by the giggling, non-stop chatter and texting throughout. I just cannot understand why people pay (and lets face it, a night at the cinema isnt exactly cheap) to see a film they have little interest in and then just chatter all the way through it.

(the guys with the uncontrollable giggling I just put down to being on drugs or something which just makes you giggle to yourself nonstop)

Good film, awful, AWFUL cinema experience. I for one will never set foot in Portsmouth again for a night out at the flicks.
