What film did you watch last night?

Patriots Day.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. It was done respectfully and the cast were stellar. A real top quality ensemble I thought. Never went over the top and the final 10 minutes or so really choked me up. Easy 8/10 for me.

Power Rangers
Was fun and a lot less cheesy and deep then a normal episode.

Best use of product placement ever!

Ghost in the Shell (2017) - 4/10

The neo-futuristic city looks spectacular, full of colour and artistic architecture designs and the special effects are marvellous, but the film itself is rather boring.

The story is nothing new as the plot moves through a very familiar rhythm, and although the fight scenes are well put together, they lack excitement.

The discussions on what it is to be human lack emotional impact as very few of the characters have any, fitting into typical character roles instead.

Akira 8/10

Never seen it before. This film came out two days before I was born. Can't believe I never got around to seeing it before.

Anyway, its Akira. Little else needs saying. It was amazing!

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Just came back and this is from someone who hasn't seen GITS anime for like 17 years. I don't remember the anime at all and truth be told, the original never engaged me and thought it wasn't a patch on Akira from what I recall. So I don't remember what changes there has been or what they kept. To me, this can be as much like an original story and I will treat it as a stand alone movie.

I found the 2017 remake to be brilliant. The CGI (for the most part) is fully realised, it looked amazing, the way it blend in with real (Hong Kong) cityscape is almost seamless, I was constantly looking for faults but it was done brilliantly and hats off for the visual effects department for that.

The story had me interested, I saw a review this morning that says it was long and it felt long, I didn't feel that at all. I thought it moved on well from one part to the next and at no point did I feel I was bored.

The pre-movie moans about Scarlett Johansson playing a "japanese" character is pointless I think after seeing this, mainly because, I don't think this is a spoiler, that she is a robot, robot don't have skin colour as such so it matters not. And she is really good in this, I thought she acted well and the supporting characters are too.

Overall I really enjoyed it, it is a good film, period, not just a good Anime adaptation/remake, its just a good movie.

8.5/10

Ghost in the Shell (2017)
....

The argument against this GITS is that it had too much Western bang-bang, and not enough metaphysics; the whitewash for American audiences goes without saying - a female super soldier and of Asian origin? - surely you're joking Mr Feynman! - looking at the opinion surveys re military service for women and current identity crises, it would blow their little shared subconscious! XD Having said that, in Japan, they don't mind it so much. You also have some leeway with cybernetic bodies. But, if you account for the original series, as well as the films + manga, the source material ranged widely, and in some instances was so far its own behind it felt convoluted just for the sake of it, as well as had plenty of filler material. Still one of the best CP stories out there. :)

The Lost City of Z (2017) - 8/10

More of a biopic than an epic adventure movie, but an interesting story nonetheless.

The story is told in a traditional, romanticised way with good pacing, although it does jump between the jungle and home life too conveniently.

Strong acting, good scenery and a good cast, but it’s a shame it had to end the way it did.

Life 8\10

Wasn't expecting much but was pretty happy overall. Some gnarly moments, well executed. Some genere cliches but to be expected.
Feels like gravity with bless George clooney and more blood.

Room: solid 8/10

Enjoyed this, took an interesting turn about two thirds of the way through in respect of the two main characters. It's not surprising it got so well received, would recommend it.

Memories of Murder - Korean film from 2003 follows a smack first ask questions later cop who tries to get a result on Korea's first serial killer. It is well paced and a good change from the usual American cop film but I'm not sure it is the 210th best film ever (IMDb). 3/5

Ghost in the Shell - 7/10

Visually stunning, great sound mixing, elements from all the different anime/manga, but the script fell flat in places.

Falling Down

Not watched in a long time but I view it as a classic now. The opening scene when he's stuck in the traffic jam is really well done.

8/10

Beauty and the beast. 8/10

Cracking movie. Very funny, very typically Disney. The singing was all bang on. I can barely remember the original so i cant really compare it though.

Only thing i didn't like was the voice of the teapot...East end cockney London accent...WHY GOD WHY
