Logan: A great end to the Xavier and Wolverine characters played by Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman. A darker, more violent story, courtesy of Deadpool's R18 success. It's the Wolverine we've all waited to see, with aspects taken from Old Man Logan and X-23. Some nice twists and character development along with the action scenes make this a little different from your average hero movie. Great acting all around. I'm sad to see Jackman and Stewart finally retire these iconic characters that they've made their own, but they've had a terrific run.
Monsters: A weirdly ethereal, almost magical story as a mismatched couple end up trekking through the central American jungle to get back home to the US. The difference is that this jungle has been colonised by strange and unknown alien creatures which the world has tried to quarantine into the jungle. Unfortunately some of these alien octopoid animals can be up to 300 metres tall, and seem to be fascinated by electricity and knocking down large buildings. The creatures are a background to the two Americans trying to get back home, and the connection they forge as they experience the jungle, the aliens and landscape surrounding them. We experience their confusion and wonder as they make their journey. This is a slower, more thoughtful sci-fi movie where explosions and guns are not evident.
Mosters 2: Dark Continent: This takes the premise of the first film, and moves it to the middle east. With a dash of Generation War and Jarhead, we follow soldiers dealing with insurgent attacks in the wake of 'Murica's efforts to destroy the monsters now infesting the middle east. Where this film falls down so badly is that the characters are unsympathetic, and behave stupidly as things fall apart after an IED attack that leaves the squad running across the desert. The film tries to recreate the other-worldly quality of the first movie but with minimal success. I just didn't like the characters or the way they behaved ie, screaming and crying when they should have been protecting each other, time and time again. It gets tiresome and boring. The screaming, shooting, and explosions add nothing to the concept of using the alien creatures as a backdrop to a lonely and desolate adventure in strange lands. A fatally flawed film that totally misunderstands what made the first film work, and gets it's characters badly wrong.
