Nightmare Alley (2021) - 6/10

A good and classic story which is well told but overall it lacks mystery and is a bit slow.

It balances the realism and mysticism of the show well, including the darker sides, and humanizes the cast of characters.

Cooper is a charismatic lead and puts on a good performance throughout.

The setting is superb with plenty of authentic looking carnival scenes and visuals from the period, but the injury detail is far too unnecessarily detailed and detracts from the scenes.

Equilibrium- 8/10
In a dystopian future, people lead lives devoid of joy, enforced by state oppression and regular injections. But Bale questions his reality and rebels against the norm and regains his personal freedom and in doing so discovers a world of beauty and that there’s more to life than just living.

More relevant today than it was on release

Mass - 8/10

In the aftermath of a violent tragedy, two couples from either side of the event arrange a cathartic meeting to air their pain.

Holy ****, this film is like the 12 angry men of grief. Set in one room with 4 people this is an incredible emotional drama with a tour de force of acting.

Having a connection with their grief made this very difficult film nearly unbearable at times and I sobbed uncontrollably at one point. Brilliant film, but I was glad when it ended as I was exhausted.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2020. Great fun 8/10. It was good to see Jim Carey rekindle some of his old charm. 95 min movie. Just right.

Perfect AV demo material on 4K disc. The sub loved it.

Munich: The Edge of War. The plot was ok but the tension was not quite there yet; just felt like ok cool that just happened lets go to the next scene.

Shang Chi. I've already seen it but when we last watched it my partner wasn't paying attention. First time I've used the Imax copy on Disney+ and it was a game changer especially with the new TV. No idea why more films aren't shot using it as widescreen feels like a waste of screen real estate.

As a film I enjoyed it and looking forward to any sequels which come from it. Going to watch Dr Strange tonight.

Dune 8/10

Weird one. Felt like not a lot happened given the run time yet it didn't feel like a slog at all. Well acted, decent enough characters and the story has been set up in a way that makes me want to watch the next one.

Also Jason Momoa is annoyingly charismatic. So Alpha it hurts.

The Harder They Fall - 5/10

Didn't really get on with this. Looked like it wanted to be a cartoon in places; silly blood spatters, people flying around after being shot. It was way too colourful for a western too. Understand they wanted to do something different but with everyone looking like they stepped out of a modelling agency with crystal clean clothes etc it just didn't work. Sets looked like sets, some of the lighting was awful too. All a bit cheap to be honest.

About 3/4 of the way through I had to resist looking at my watch, as I'm aware that I start to lose patience around that point. I know what you mean about injury detail, although I think that, the casting of the female lead and some of the way the scenes were lit was a bit of a Del Torro hallmark that was inescapable really.

I really enjoyed it, and found it quite a cinematic film.

The Irishman (2019) 7/10

Mentioned in another thread. It's a reunion of Hollywood greats, De Niro, Pacino, Pesci and Keitel.

I enjoyed but it is meandering and 3½ long! The anti-ageing CGI is ropey and would have so benefitted from younger actors for the earlier scenes.

Whereas you watch 'Casino' (1995) a film whioch depicts the glamour (Sharon Stone ;)), and the violence (like the Godfather, Goodfellas) it needed more edge. The unions and crime...
