Was looking at investing in some more filters as I only have a couple, so what do you have?

I have:

Hoya circular polariser 67mm
B+W 10 Stop ND 67mm
Cokin ND GRAD (I actually don't know the gradient, plus I think it's one of the basic filters)

67mm B&W F-Pro UV
67mm B&W F-Pro UV
77mm B&W F-Pro UV
77mm B&W F-Pro UV
77mm B&W F-Pro UV
77mm B&W 10 stop ND
77mm B&W Red
77mm B&W Kaesemann Circular Polarizer

Lee 2 stop soft ND grad
Lee 1 stop ND
Lee 2 stop ND
Custom 8 stop ND
Custom 12 stop ND

58 + 52 mm CP filters of the well known high street variety
Hoya R72 IR filter 58mm
Hoya Skylight 1A 58 + 55 mm (unused)
Hoya Skylight 1B 55 mm (unused)
Cokin P120, 121, 121L, 153 filters

Notice that around half the folk so far have a 10-stop ND.

So why does almost no-one stock them?

Why do I have to go to Germany to get an 82mm one to fit the canon lenses most likely to want to use one, the 16-35 and the TSE-24?

Whilst you say that; two of my friends went by way of the B&W website in Germany and redirected to suppliers in the UK which had them in stock. Delivered within a couple of days. :)

i have a couple of filters, but as far as i can remember, none of them are attached to my lenses.

When i first got it, i had issues with my 100-400L with regards to image quality and it was suggested that i remove the filter, which seemed to make an improvement!

As I consider myself still very much a novice in DSLR can people enlighten me a little on the use of these filters.

I haven't got any !

Is there an advantage of adding a filter to your camera over say manipulating the photograph in photoshop ? I may have caused a few cringes there !
I always had it in my head if you shoot in B&W, it will always be B&W. If you shoot in colour you can make it B&W.

I suspect you're confusing the brand B+W for Black and White photography?
Anyway, most filters aren't necessary unless you've got a specific scene in mind -
Graduated filters can help you expose the sky better whilst still keeping the foreground well well exposed. e.g.

But it's not to say PP can't do the same - to an extend, if the highlights aren't too overblown, you can replicated it with Lightroom.

That said, there's one thing no matter how much PP can try and do, and that's a 10 stop ND filter. What that essentially does it stop down the whole scene by 10 stops, thus allowing you to slow the shutter speed for dramatic movement such as skies, water flow and even smooths out rough water tide/ripples.

Is an classic example of a shot with a 10 stop filter.
You can even blur people in a busy street

That's the benefit of ND filters. There maybe more but that's sufficient enough to warrant a purchase or make a ghetto one.

Hi Mr Jones,

Yes I was confusing the two. I feel a bit of a plank now :D

Really appreciate your post too, thanks very much.

Here's what's in my bag:

77mm Hoya R72 IR Filter
77mm B+W SMRC CPL
77mm B+W ND 3.0

Lee 0.3 ND Grad (Soft)
Lee 0.6 ND Grad (Soft)
Lee 0.75 ND Grad (Soft)
Lee 0.9 ND Grad (Soft)

Lee 0.6 ND Grad (Hard)
Lee 0.75 ND Grad (Hard)
Lee 0.9 ND Grad (Hard)

Lee ProGlass 0.9 ND
Heliopan Slim 105mm CPL

Cokin P Range

ND2, 4 & 8 plus ND soft grads 2, 4 & 8
58mm & 77mm ring
Regular & Wide angle holder

I picked up a job lot on Ebay early on with Sunset, Fog & Pastels but don't ever use them.
Got to watch out using them with your superwides though as i've had some real shockers on holiday. That 10 stop looks fun though.

I got a bunch of filters with a film camera I purchased off ebay. Rarely use them though. I got a selection of Cokin filters, ND grad, red, sepia, a magnifying glass type one which is actually quite good, and also a bunch of circular filters. They're all 49mm thread so they only fit my 28mm Minolta Prime. I don't think I'm going to get a filter for my 16-105 as apparently they accentuate the barrel distortion at the wide end which isn't something I want.

58 hoya uv, 77, 58 and 52 Hoya CPL as its sunny here.

I think I wll invest in a gradient one as I like the effects of above and also a red 52 for my nifty for B amd W portrait shots
