What fuel for 1JZ-GTE Supra?

I ran my Soarer (same engine) for several months on 95 and honestly did not notice any ill effects. I stuck the odd Fill of V-Power in once in a while along with an ECU adapt/relearn and could not notice the difference either. I only now run elusively on V-Power due to an exhaust change (and therefore moderately increased boost).

The ECU is supposedly very good at adjusting itself to changes in Fuel quality. You can speed this process up by pulling the EFI fuse for a while, bunging it back in and going for a drive with your fuel of choice driving styles (Either caning it to adapt aggressively or pottering around to make everything a bit more sedate). Made a very, very noticeable effect to my car :).

1JZs by nature run a tad rich so get used to the smell of petrol :D. A replacement O2 can help with fuel, but at £120 for a genuine Denso one they aren't cheap (and to be honest I didn't notice much of a difference between that and the eBay one I was running at the time). Bad fuel economy could also be caused by leaking caps in the ECU.

Might be worth changing the PCV valve which was apparently a 'recall' back in Japan, and supposedly could cause premature turbo failure. If you do go ahead and do it yourself DON'T lose the old grommet that runs into the cam cover. It turns the job from 5 minuter to a cam cover off job which although isn't really difficult, it is EXTREMELY annoying when you consider that if you were just a little bit more careful you wouldn't be doing it! I think the bits came to £60 all in from Toyota, cheaper than a new set of turbos!

The turbos are probably the biggest weak point of the engine. They won't flow enough air for over 350bhp (despite the rest of the engine being well up for it) and the seals tend to let a little (or a lot!) of oil past, especially if the car has a larger than standard exhaust. If your car does dump out a fair bit of smoke be prepared for a sizeable bill in the future. ~£800 for rebuilt twins with steel wheels or ££££ for a single setup. You could take a chance with another set of standard blowers, but my thinking is that they are old turbos, it is a common problem, how many 'good' sets are out there, and how long will they stay good for?

Not sure how much of that you did or didn't know, but every little helps :).

Any more questions you have feel free to ask and I'll help if I can.

Best of luck and keep us updated. I utterly adore JZA70s :).

Is the car a fresh import? If so get it mapped for whatever your going to put in it - SUL, VPower, Tesco Momentum - even 95 if you want it mapped for 95. I see no reason why you couldn't.

If its been in the UK for a while can you not ask the previous owner what he has put in?

Either way you really should have the car re-mapped for whatever fuel you intend to use. If your buying go-fasta bits, put them on first then get it mapped accordingly.

I don't know if Supra engine ECUs can be mapped or of you have to buy after-market. My impreza was mapped for Shell Optimax, when Shell changed the mix for VPower it made a difference to the car and for the sake of a few hundred quid was best to get it mapped again (using OE ECU)

Does the engine have a knock sensors? If so, you can run whatever you like.
