What happens if you don't include Windows OS in configurator?

Looking at get a custom build, but don't need Windows 11, so I'm wondering what happens when you don't add the OS to the configuration?

I assume that OCUK would still have to install a windows version in order to complete the build and test it, but maybe not?

So my questions are, do OCUK
  • Still install windows for building & testing?
  • Remove it prior to dispatching?
  • Leave it but its unregistered?
Finally any opinions on whether one should just eat the cost and have it with a purchased/registered version of Windows installed?

Ring them and ask if they'll test it using something like Bazzite - there's no reason you shoud be forced to buy a license that you don't need/want?

PCs without an operating system are still fully tested with the same extensive methods as systems chosen with an operating system, including CPU, memory, and graphics stress tests.

The only real difference between a pre-built PC with an operating system and one without is that the hard drive is formatted before shipping.

Brilliant - thanks for the link.

Having visited OcUK - they have (semi) automated testing software that is repeatable and doesn't rely on the final shipped Windows installation

That is a bit of a shame, last time I bought a prebuilt the (competitor) was quite happy to install Windows but not activate it, which I did on arrival.

Hardly the end of the world but it's nice having the choice.

Mind you, I can imagine that's trickier with Windows 11 and all the account shenanigans.

OCUK do accommodate requests on their configurators, so I don't see why you couldn't ask.
